Tips No. 1 - Preparation - Getting Organised

7 Easy Steps to Be Organised In Debt

In order to take control of your debt problem, it is important that you get yourself organised with all the information related to each company that you owe money to.

If you don't take this step, you will be walking around with the constant worry of what is going to happen with your home, how you are going to pay x.y or z bill, or who will be chasing you for money on the telephone or in the mailbox, today.

Getting organized is the first step to getting out of debt.
.

1. The best and cheapest way of doing this would be to allocate an A4 folder specifically for this task. This will ensure that you will have everything in one place and easily accessible.

2. File each company that you owe money to and with all the documentation that you have received from them, in a separate section of the folder. Use dividers for this and also make sure that the documentation is in chronological date order.

3. At the beginning of the folder, prepare a list of each of the companies and the amounts that you owe them. Also include the dates that they should be paid. You can do this on a spreadsheet or write down the list by hand. The advantage of using a spreadsheet is that you can adjust the figures more easily but sometimes it is better to write something down by hand, as it substantiates the facts more visibly. It is a choice!

4. Next make another list of all your incoming, and where they actually come from. Don't bother worrying that this figure looks desperate as compared to your outgoings right now. Remember, Rome was not built in a day.

5. Make a final list, but this time make a list of all the questions you have going around in your head with regard to these debts and write these down on a separate piece of paper. This would be best achieved if you go for a long walk, with a small notebook in your pocket, so that you could concentrate away from the problem. Solitary walking can improve your ability to make decisions and help you to direct your focus.

6. Once you have the above in place and before the next step, take the time to discuss with your partner, or relevant others, what you are planning, so that they too may begin to feel more secure in the knowledge that the debt problem are finally being dealt with.

7. Telephone the nearest free Debt Support Agency and make an appointment to visit them, with your folder.

You are not going to like having to face doing this task but as soon as it is done, you will be just steps away from dealing with your debts and being in control of your finances once again. You should actually feel a sign of relief for the fact that you are taking responsibility of getting out of debt.

Tip 2 - Debt Support Agencies

Now that you have your folder prepared with all the data regarding your debts in one place, and have made an appointment to visit your local debt support agency - your next step is to prepare yourself to be in the right frame of mind.

It is only natural that you will feel nervous about discussing your personal financial details with a stranger. But, try and keep your focus on the one thing that is most important to you ... getting out of debt and as soon as possible.

Also, bear in mind that the person you may be dealing with, is there to help you and may be doing so voluntarily. They will have their own reasons for being there; it could be that they too have been in the same situation once and want to give back some of the help they had received, or even that they know someone close to them who has gone through similar problems with their financial status.

Either way, they will be familiar with your debts problem and it is highly likely that they will have a vast amount of experience in this area.

If, on the other hand, you are unfortunate enough to have to discuss your situation with someone who is unfriendly, patronizing, or who acts superior - STOP!

Ask to speak to the manager of the agency and inform them of your concerns regarding the person allocated to supporting you. See if they can resolve the problem and if they cannot be more sympathetic to your needs, leave and go to another agency. On no account allow yourself to be intimidated.

Remember, you are on a mission, to get out of debt and to start bring money back into your life. .

Also, ensure that the agency you select to support you is not affiliated to any financial restructuring company because, their ulterior goal will be to earn a commission out of any monetary arrangement they make on your behalf.

Throughout this process, it is imperative that you have a positive attitude because, with the right frame of mind, you will be more confident and able to express yourself with clarity. Of course, you will feel nervous but, by concentrating on getting through the interview with inner-confidence and determination; you should reach a satisfactory conclusion.

If, however, you find that you begin to speak too fast, because of your nervousness, then you could use this trick I learned, to slow down your speech. As you speak, gently tap your thigh, slowly, with one finger. Obviously you do this discreetly! It definitely works. Try it!

Tip 3 - THE HOUSEHOLD BUDGET

One of the most important aspects of getting out of debt is to make sure that you are living within your budget. This can be easier said than done because of the fact that many bills are not monthly but quarterly or yearly.

What you have to do is to break down these expenses into monthly figures and bank the balance of the income which is not due to be paid on any particular month.

To do this, you should create a spreadsheet for the monthly income and outgoings for your household.

1. Make a list of all the monthly outgoings you have.

Make a note of all the outgoings which are yearly, such as utilities and break these down into monthly equivalent amounts. Allow for the fact that you will not be spending so much in certain warmer months.

Take into account car repairs, yearly insurance costs for the car, home and life policies. Again break these down into monthly amounts.

Decide how much you will be spending on birthday, Christmas presents and holidays on a yearly basis and again break these down into monthly amounts.

2. Make a list of all your incomings and include any benefits which you receive.

Deduct the actual monthly outgoings you will need from the incoming amount and bank the difference. This difference will be carried forward month by month until the year end. Some months you may find that you have more going out than coming in but you also know that it is just temporary and within a month or two the opposite will apply.

The advantage of carrying out this exercise is that you will always know how much money you need at any given time and will therefore not be stressed out by the lack of money all the time.

It will also bring to light exactly how much extra money you may need to have coming into your household if the figures do not balance. That will be the time when you may consider taking on some extra work to generate the extra income required.
