Debt relief offer to good to be true?

Are you trying to get out of debt; and all the offers you read seem to good to be true? Can you spot the scam? How can you avoid being scammed and paying 1,000's more than you need to. Also why pay someone else to do what you can do yourself with a little bit of work.

How to spot a Debt Relief Scam 

Okay so your determined to get out of debt. You've done a couple of web searches for help to do it. You see 11,400,000 results for debt relief on Google. Browsing through the listing you see some details that say things like:

  • Fast Debt relief

  • Instant debt relief

  • Set your own Debt Payment

  • Easy Debt relief


Beware of these chances are; they are scams.

 

Why could these be scams? 

Well to begin with numbers 1 and 2. Lowering you debt can take quite some time. Some programs that advertise it as taking a year to 2 depending on your level of debt are pretty much being truthful. No I know that in our modern instant gratification society this may not be a popular statement. However, it is true so, we have to deal with it.

Now for setting your own debt payment. Where you can negotiate newer terms for your accounts and should. No creditor in the world is going to give that much power over their profits. They may do things like forgive late fees or give you a temporarily lowered interest rate. But; there is no way you will get to set your own payment out right.

Easy debt relief; while it doesn't need to be difficult. This implies that you will have to do very little work to get out debt. In fact the opposite is true; you may need to quite a bit of work. Especially if you decide to go it alone.

What about Debt conslidation companies? 

While they are not exactly scams you. You still need to be careful with these also. Many will try to get you to take a home equity line of credit. which will serve the purpose of consolidating your debt. It only works if you have the available credit and/or the home equity to use. Additionally they may have agreements in place with many larger lenders to receive a commission for any funds they collect on the lenders behalf. So make sure you do your homework and don't be afraid to ask questions. If your gut feeling is to walk away then don't be afraid to. After all it is your money; they should be truly working in your best interest to get it.

So what now? 

You can get out of debt. It is not overly difficult; but you will have to work and sacrifice a little for it. You a web search for consumer associations in your area. They have a lot of up to date information; and best of they are free or very low cost. Additionally they can help you create a custom plan to get out of debt. Additionally your local may have the printed resources to help.
