Lose that Gut!
For men, the sign of a love of food ... or beer! ... is often accumulation of fat around the belly or gut. Here I offer advice and tips on how to target weight loss in that problem area and lose your beer belly in a matter of weeks
Burn Fat, Build Muscle, Keep Fit
It's easy right?!
I don't want to sound harsh, but losing weight and keeping fit actually is very easy. By that I mean the 'how' of it is easy - obvious even! - it's the actual doing it and doing it consistently that's the hard bit!The basic formula is 'Calories taken in will turn to fat if not burned.' Yes there's 'science' which goes deeper and I'll explain that here - ways to 'turbo' the positive impact of what you do. But at the end of the day you either have to eat less or exercise more or you'll stay the same. Anyone who tells you can lose that beer belly any other way is either mistaken or fibbing! If you set out to build muscle you will in turn reduce your beer gut and this is key to the formula I'll describe here.
The food part first is critical - I'm not going to go in depth into different diets here but you do need to eat a balanced diet. In essence to reduce that beer belly it's all about eating less fat and carbohydrate and more protein. At all times be 'sensible' and remember the old '5 fruit and veg' a day to maintain your body's natural state>
What I'm going to describe in this site is what you might call a lifestyle system rather than a diet - a system to give you some 'tweaks' to get rid of your beer belly over a sensible period of time rather than some crash diet you'll give up on after days.
Golden Tip Number One - It's called a beer belly for a reason! And if you want to get rid of it you're going to have to reduce it's intake! Think about what you consume and ways you can make some reductions - I'm not suggesting you 'give up' beer altogether but think about when and how much you drink. If you cut back just 10% that's a 10% way towards reducing the old beer belly. Over a period of time and by following my other advice here you'll gradually see real benefits.
The program I followed is excellent and isn't about tediously counting calories or having to stick to complex gym routines! As in all the best solutions, it's more about having th right knowledge!

Can you Target Weight Loss to the Beer Belly?
Don't Believe the Hype!
No I'm not going to recommend or endorse the latest 'Super Dynamo Abs Master!' that you'll see on the cable TV shopping channels! In fact if you want to get rid of that fat making up your beer belly I'd suggest far more traditional methods. The best way to achieve this is not through punishing sets of abs exercises - it's through sensible diet and exercise.Think about it - doing hundreds of sit ups, crunches and other exercises to target your abs will certainly strengthen and build them but if they're covered by a layer of fat forming your beer belly no-one will ever see them! Sorry if that sounds harsh but again it's a simple fact.
Start off by thinking about sustainable ways to reduce your overall calorie intake. Do you really need that packet of crisps as a mid morning snack or that 2nd chocolate biscuit with your afternoon coffee!? Without becoming obsessive, think about starting a food diary and writing down what you eat and drink over a week. Be honest with yourself and you might be surprised by what you learn! For example, if you realise you're eating 5 packets of crisps a week could you cut this to 3 the next week? That alone will reduce your calorie intake by 300-400 calories. A few simple changes like this over a period of time will produce real results in that goal of reducing your mid section beer belly.
Your Body Mass Index
The Science of a Beer Belly, Paunch or Gut!
If you're reading here, chances are you or someone close to you needs some help and advice about weight management. The beer belly is of course a classic sign of a 'problem' but to know if your weight presents health issues calculating your Body Mass Index is a great start.Body mass index, BMI, is a number generated by dividing your weight in kilograms by your height in metres squared. This gives you a simple indication of whether you need to reduce that beer belly!
There are plenty of 'calcualtors' on line that will work this out for you so don't worry about the maths. Do a search for 'BMI calculator' on Google. A good example is -
http://www.weightlossresources.co.uk/body_weight/healthy_weight/bmi_calculator.htm
BMI is used to determine whether an man or woman falls into a broad band considered to be healthy weight. BMI is used by scientist and researchers to determine the health implications of being a certain Index level.
BMI category
below 20 - underweight
20-25 - normal
25-30 - overweight
over 30 - obese
The old joke is that 'I'm too short for my weight!' but in reality your BMI calculation can serve as a further warning than the old beer belly that you need to reduce your calorie intake.

Quick Tips to Reduce that Belly
It's all about small steps...
It's not about crash diets and becoming a marathon runner overnight! Small steps and positive lifestlye changes will serve you better on you mission to reduce and lose your beer belly. Here are some basic tips -Pump iron! No I don't mean you have to set out to become Mr Universe but it's a scientific fact that weight loss is achieved more effectively if you combine weight and resistance training with cardio exercise like running. Muscle actually burns calories as it functions so the more muscle you build the faster you'll brun calories, reduce body fat and lose your gut.
Set realistic goals. It's great to have a goal to work towards - either in weight reduction or perhaps dropping a waist size. Keep it achievable though - having a visible six pack in 2 months may be pushing it!
Eat Breakfast. The old wive's tale is true - it's the most important meal of the day to don't skip it. Muesli or porridge are both ideal to fill you up and give you energy to burn without feeling sluggish. Scrambled eggs are fantastic too - low in fat and high in protein.
Speed up your metabolism. Drinkig a glass of warm water with half a lemon squeezed into it is one of nature's real 'magic potions' - It'll speed up your body's own calorie burning and cleanse your liver at the same time. Adding spices to food can also increase your metabolism.
Snack all day! No I don't mean chocolate bars and crips! But eating 'little and often' means you won't get hungry and be temtped to bing on a blowout burger and chips ... healthy snacks of nuts, dried apricots and fresh fruit will give you important nutrients as well as keeping hunger at bay.
It may not just be the food and beer growing your belly!
All about Stress!
For many years stress has been associated with belly fat and following recent scientific research the link has been confirmed. In stressful situations, your body releases a stress hormone called cortisol. Excess cortisol production leads to build up of abdominal fat ie the old beer belly. Besides being less then attractive, a beer belly increases your risk of developing high blood pressure, diabetes, heart disease and stroke.Be aware of your stress level and start to manage it. All forms of exercise - from a brisk walk to a swim with the kids - will help reduce your stress. Keep an open mind and think about trying something new like tai chi, yoga or simple meditation all of which will help reduce your stress and potentially your beer belly. The truth is there's no quick fix for losing belly fat but with the right information and some small lifestyle changes real improvements can be made. For more information -

Beer Belly Busting Nutrition Tips
Yes you can eat your way to a slimmer trimmer you!
Eating right actually takes a lot less time and is a lot less painfull than most people think. On your mission to reduce your beer belly thinking about what you eat and making some good decisions could save you from having to spend twice the time in the gym! There really are some simple ways to change your daily eating habits withour making sacrifices you might expect - ways to reduce your intake and storage of bpdy fat and burn away that beer gut!
My fat burning beer gut busting tips are...
Eat breakfast - a breakfast that contains carborhydrates, protein - and yes, a little fat. Instant porridge is a great ingredient in this key meal of the day - it really will fill you up and take away the temptation to snack. Missing breakfast will make you feel hungry later and there's a real risk of a binge and consuming more calories than you really need>
Drink water. What most people don't realise is when you think your hungry your body is actually THIRSTY! Why is that? Basically because your body draws a large percentage of its water from the food you eat. Drink more and the body doens't dry out for food! Less food = less calorie intake = reduced beer belly!
Snack on bananas. For me, these are a true miracle food. They even come in their own handy wrapper! Bananas are a rich source of vitamins, minerals and antioxidants. They are water laden, full of dietary fibre which can curb your apetite and loaded with potassium and megnesium which aid muscle development.
Calculate and reduce your Bad Foods percentage. Do you know how much of what you eat is obviously 'bad?' I'm a great believer in a sensible diet where you can still eat the odd burger, pizza or chocolate bar but you need to be aware of how much of your weekly intake comes from these foods. Small changes will make a big difference and over time reduce your beer belly. Here's an example - when you go out for that pizza, have a salad as a starter and 'fill up# on it. Go for a thin base and either no cheese or low fat cheese. Finally, spice it up with some chilli or other peppers and these will accelerate your digestion so you burn those calories even faster!

What's so bad about a Beer Belly then?!
We may all not want to have the flat stomach or 'six pack' but the benefits of a reduced beer velly are far more than 'cosmetic.' Reducing abdominal fat has proven valuable health benefits.
Those with apple shaped bodies (fattest in the abdomen - Beer belly! ) have a greater risk of heart disease and diabetes than those with pear shapes (fattest in the buttocks, Hips and thighs).
Fat in the bely area is stored deeper inside your body - in and around the liver and other organs. Fat in the hip and thigh region is mainly stored just beneath the skin.
So not only will reducing your beer belly look better and make you feel better, it will increase your life expectancy and improve your overall health levels.
