Panic Attacks, Panic Disorders

What is a Panic Attack?

A panic attack is a sudden, out of the blue feeling of extreme fear and discomfort. It comes most unexpectedly and without any warning and you can feel your heart beating fast, feel dizzy, breathless, choked or as if you are going crazy or going to die.

What is Panic Disorder?

A person is diagnosed as having panic disorder if he has recurrent episodes of panic attacks and develops a fear of having another attack. Many times the patient will convince himself/herself so fervently that they are dying that many sufferers often feel the need to go to the emergency room and get tested. Even though this disorder is easily as well as successfully treatable, if it is not diagnosed it can become very debilitating to the individual.

Panic disorder strikes between 3 and 6 million Americans, and is twice as common in women as in men. It can appear at any age in children or in the elderly but most often it begins in young adults.

Symptoms of a Panic Attack

In a panic attack symptoms develop abruptly and usually reach their peak within 10 minutes. Some of the common symptoms include:

a) Palpitations

b) Sweating

c) Trembling

d) Shortness of breath

e) Chest pain or discomfort

f) Nausea

g) Dizziness

h) Fear of losing control

i) Fear of dying

Treatment for Panic Disorder

Panic disorder often responds to treatment with medication, therapy, or a combination of both.

Cognitive/behavioral therapy is a relatively new treatment for panic that has been shown to be successful. Instead of using old-fashioned analysis-based techniques, therapists employing new CBT methods focus on the present panic -- and how to eliminate it.

People who experience panic are not "crazy" and do not need to be in therapy for extended periods of time.

Some people find the greatest relief from panic disorder symptoms when they take certain prescription medications. Two types of medications that have been shown to be safe and effective in the treatment of panic disorder are antidepressants and benzodiazepines.

In addition, people with panic disorder may need treatment for other emotional problems. Depression has often been associated with panic disorder, as have alcohol and drug abuse.

What Causes Panic Disorder?

There are several theories about the causes of panic disorder and since every individual has a different predisposition, zeroing in on a specific cause can be quite an arduous task. Although treatable, this disorder can be very devastating and debilitating to the person if it goes untreated and may result in specific phobias like fear of driving the car or fear of leaving the house. It can result in the loss of a job or even relationship problems.

Fortunately, even with this disorder's rather undefined nature of causality, there is much treatment available that has helped majority of people suffering from panic disorder to cope with this problem.

Controlling Panic Attacks

Panic attacks are often a result of trauma; however, some people develop panic attacks for seemingly no reason as well. Some of the symptoms of a panic attack include feeling short of breath, palpitations of the heart, chest pain, dizziness, sweating, trembling, and losing a sense of where you are. Even though a panic attack may feel like it is going to kill you, there are a variety of ways that you can get yourself through the panic attack. Once you have one of theses attacks, you may be fearful that you'll have another one. However, it is important that you understand that there are methods of controlling panic attacks, and you are in control of yourself. The following are a few simple tips that may help you when dealing with a panic attack.

Tip #1 - Focus on Something Else - Many people who deal with panic attacks find that focuses their attention on something else can help with controlling panic attacks. Panic attacks tend to take you away from reality; however, taking the time to deliberately focus on an object can help you to get through the panic attack. Basically, focusing on an object near you can help to bring you back to reality. So, you will need to pick an object that is nearby. Then, you will want to pick up the object and examine it carefully. After examining it, then go on to describe it to someone or even aloud to yourself in detail. This should help you get your focus off of the panic attack you were having.

Tip #2 - Relaxation Techniques - Another thing that many people find helpful for controlling panic attacks is the use of various relaxation techniques. Basically these techniques are used to control the body and the brain. You can train all of your muscles to slowly relax as you go through your various relaxation techniques.

Tip #3 - Deep Breathing - You may also find that using deep and controlled breathing can help you with controlling panic attacks. Deep breathing is related to some of the relaxation techniques that you can learn. In fact, just knowing how to breathe right can actually help you to lower your blood pressure and your heart rate. When you feel a panic attack coming on, focus on your breathing and getting plenty of oxygen into your body. Property deep breathing will help you to make it through the attack.

Each of these tips can help you when it comes to controlling panic attacks. Of course you may want to use them altogether instead of just using them independently. When used together, no doubt they will help you keep your panic attacks under control and they'll be much easier for you to handle and survive as well.

Eliminating Panic Attacks

My first encounter with a panic attack came at the age of twenty-nine. From what I've learned by reading and by talking to other panic attack sufferers, this was later than usual. Most panic sufferers that I've spoken with or read about had their first panic attack either in their teens or early twenties.

Mine occurred whilst I was driving to see my parents one Friday evening in June 1985. Thinking back, aside from the usual panic attack symptoms, I think the most terrifying part was that I didn't have a clue as to what was happening to me. I'd never, up to that point, experienced anything so intense and frightening.

I have heard that some people suffer one isolated attack and then it goes away forever. This wasn't to be in my case, after that first incident, I started having panic attacks very frequently whilst travelling and this led me to developing a phobia toward travelling by any form of transport.

Probably, the worst thing about my panic encounters was the fact that they would strike me, seemingly, out of nowhere and for no apparent reason. I could be feeling fine one moment and the next I'd be facing yet another appointment with terror.

I searched for many years for a panic attack treatment that would eliminate these attacks, and my subsequent anxiety disorder, from my life but to no avail. Everything I tried, and believe me I tried so many things that I can barely remember most of them either did nothing or made my condition even worse.

Eventually, after becoming agoraphobic and unwilling and unable to fight my condition any more. I more or less resigned myself to being housebound for the rest of my days and finally admitted to myself that I had a problem. At the time I didn't realize it, but looking back now, this was when the healing began. I no longer became stressed by forcing myself to go out and I stopped kidding myself that one morning I would wake up and all my troubles would have faded away during the night.

Call it coincidence, but just at the point where I was ready to really start getting better, I found the tool that allowed me to say goodbye to my panic attacks forever. And it did it in a matter of just a few short hours. In addition, for the first time in oh so many years, I began to feel my anxiety starting to slip away.

Panic attacks, panic disorder, anxiety disorder and agoraphobia stole everything that I loved about my life and turned it into a living nightmare. They didn't only affect my life, their effects upon me altered the lives of my family and friends too. It can be conquered. It can be cured.
