Your baby needs noise too at sleep time. After all, think about where he's been sleeping for almost a year before entering the world - in the womb. In that environment, your baby slept in all kinds of different situations where he was surrounded by all kinds of different noises. So it's natural to try to duplicate that setting when trying to get your baby to sleep and to keep her sleeping; have her in a room that has some kind of soothing background noise.

If your baby is around six months old and you are still struggling to getting baby to sleep through the night on her own, then you might consider a more rigid approach involving a well defined methodology to get her to sleep unaided. The so-called Ferber Method is based on the principle of getting your baby to discover ways to fall asleep on her own. Using this method, many babies will learn to get to sleep all by themselves in a relatively short period of time.
