You are reading this because you need to find out how to get kids to listen to you. I know, I have been there myself being the parent of a 4 year old. Nothing is more frustrating than trying to talk to your child only to have him talk over what you are trying to say... but nothing is more frustrating when they completely ignore you. Luckily, I have found a few "tricks" that I use when getting children to listen.

When you want to get your kids to listen to you, you first must get down to their level and make eye contact. Sometime you will need to touch them in order to get their attention. Talking to toddlers from across the room or from another room simply doesn't work and is not effective in getting children to listen.

One you have lowered yourself down to their level and established eye contact, tell your child exactly what to do. For example, don't say this: "Billy, don't run. I said no running!" Instead say:
Sally, please walk instead of running" Young children get confused from the word don't, and they might not know exactly what you mean when you say it. Just be specific and say exactly what you need them to know. For another example, say "Keep your paint on these papers" instead of "Don't get paint on the table." Talking to toddlers and getting children to listen is about speaking to them clearly and right to the point. They don't have the attention span to listen to long, drawn out requests or lectures, which bring me to my next point...

It doesn't have to turn into an argument every time. Find out what you are doing wrong here.

Don't say: "Get ready to go"
Instead say " Put on your jacket and hat and bring your backpack"

Don't say "Be a good boy and clean up your toys"
Say "Put your toys in the basket" instead.

When talking to toddlers and getting children to listen to you in return you need to describe the problem. When you give them information, it will help them figure out what to do.

"Bugs come in the house when you hold the door open"
"I talking on the phone and I need you to be quiet"

Use fewer words when talking to toddlers, because they tune you out when you speak with words that they don't understand, and when you go on a rant and don't really have a point.

It is not that difficult to get your kids to listen and respect you. Find out what you are doing wrong right now.

Try not to back yourself in a corner when getting children to listen and do as you say. Here is a tip that has helped me A LOT! Use "When" instead of "If":

Don't say this: "If you don't finish dinner you can't play with your toy"
Say it this way instead "When you finish dinner you can play with your toy"

I will close this article with one of the most important tips I have ever leaned. NEVER yell. In fact, the louder you yell, the less effective you will be in getting children to listen. When you scream and yell, you show your children that you are out of control. You are the parent. If you find that you are reaching the point where you are going to yell, leave the room for a minute or two and compose yourself. Yelling scares children and it wont work when talking to toddlers.
