Remove Everything from Drawers and Cabinets

Image: Bill Longshaw / FreeDigitalPhotos.net
Yes, you heard it right - EVERYTHING. Admittedly, this will take a considerable chunk of your time but it is easier to start with an empty space and fill it rather than simply pushing things around. If you line things up on the counter, someone else can help by putting the items in some type of order.
Make Use of All Available Space
Try to think of creative ways to organize your things. In the kitchen, for example, appliances or extra containers can be stored on top of the cabinets as long as they don't extend all the way to the ceiling. That's extra storage space without benefit of a storage container. In the bedroom, you can store shoes and winter clothes in flat storage bins that slide easily under the bed or the dresser. Take a look at these organizing products from Amazon.com.
Sterilite 66-Quart Ultra Underbed Box
If you want a really good underbed storage, this one's definitely worth the price. It has a slim design (measures 39-1/2-by-20-1/4-by-7-Inch) that fits under a bed to maximize storage space. It also offers easier mobility under heavy loads and has an indexed lid for better stacking capability.

If you're looking for a more affordable alternative, consider this. Made of durable plastic, with wheels for ease of mobility and has a latching cover which remains securely locked. Measures 20-inch by 42-inch by 1/2-inch.
DAZZ Underbed Shoe Storage
No space for your shoes? No problem. Store your shoes or other smaller belongings in these underbed storage boxes with cedar, slide them under your bed and forget about them. The cedar inserts will help protect your shoes from any odors, damage caused by insects, mildew or other detriments. These underbed storage boxes are large enough to hold at least 12 pairs of shoes, yet small enough to hide easily under your bed. Made from natural cotton canvas, and has a clear vinyl top to allow you to see inside. Side pull handles make for easy carrying. Fold away and store when not in use.
Label Your Containers
Let Sharpie Help You Do the Job!
Sharpie Permanent Marker Fine Tip 5 Pack (See all Permanent Markers & Marker Pens)
Make sure you can easily identify what items are stored in certain containers. For this, you will need to use tape and a permanent marker. Don't write anything on the container in case you want to reuse them. Labeling also comes in handy in case you decide to sell or give away a container of books or something. If each of your containers are labelled, you won't have to open all of them just to know which one has the items you're looking for.
Getting organized at home takes time.
But once you get through the initial hurdles, returning everything you use in their proper places will help you maintain a more organized home.
