Getting Out of a Speeding Ticket Whether You are Right or Wrong

Wow, What a bummer. You are on the way home and suddenly you see the blue and red lights in your rear view. Getting out of a speeding ticket is not impossible, but it all starts with your encounter with the police officer.

The police officers are here for our protection. Yeah it is a bummer when they write us a ticket, but always remember that they are just doing their job. The jurisdictions that they work for have a vested financial interest in their officers generating operating revenue via the ticketing system.

So where do you turn for help for getting out of speeding ticket? Maybe the following tips will help you avoid that costly ticket and raise in insurance premiums that comes with it.

Getting Out of Speeding Ticket Starts With How You Treat the Officer

Don't Make Yourself Memorable

When you get pulled over, treat the officer with respect. As the officer is approaching the vehicle, keep your hands on the steering wheel at the 10 and 2 position. Do not reach for anything or make any sudden movements. Also do not answer your cell phone if it rings. If it is night, you could turn on your interior light as well.

Be polite when dealing with the officer. You may not agree with him, but the side of the road is no place for an argument. If you do act beligerant, you may find yourself going to jail. If you disagree, fight it out in court.

Many times if you are truly remorseful and courteous to the officer, you will get off with only a warning.

The goal here is not to make yourself memorable, unless it is for good behavior. Officers are people too, and if you act a fool when they have to deal with you, then they will probably go the extra mile to be there should you have a court case. They will also probably take down some notes to be sure they have their facts in order.

Ask & You May Receive - Be Sure to Ask the Officer for Leniency

It is important that you not admit guilt when the officer stops you. The officer's opening line will more than likely be "Do you know why I pulled you over?". If you say "Yeah I was speeding" or "Yes I ran that stop sign", you just admitted your guilt. Politely tell them that you do not know why they are pulling you over, and then follow the conversation from there.

One of the best ways to get out of a speeding ticket is to just ask the officer to let you off with a warning. If you have treated the officer with respect, and were not driving in a reckless manor, then you may just be able to get off with a warning.

Getting Out of a Speeding Ticket - Make Good Notes

One of your best assets in getting out of a speeding ticket is to make good notes immediately after the ticket is issued. Pull over into a parking lot and write down everything you can remember about the incident.

Write down the speed you thought you were going, traffic and weather conditions, time of day, who was with you, officers attitude, what you were wearing, everything. Things you think minor at the time can be what gets you out of the ticket later.

You can review these notes later to help you uncover some clue as to how to defend your case.

Getting Out of Speeding Ticket - Don't Forget Defensive Driving

The easiest way of getting out of a speeding ticket is to take defensive driving. Most police agencies do offer this in lieu of paying the fine. However, it will still cost you court costs and the cost of the defensive driving course, but you will not have to worry about your insurance rates going up. In fact, many insurance companies offer a discount for a certified defensive driving course.

In most states, you can only take defensive driving once per year to remove a ticket. Another thing to consider is that if you have already taken defensive driving for the insurance discount, and then you get a ticket, most agencies will not allow you to take it again in order to remove the ticket.

Getting Out of Speeding Ticket - Take it to Court

If you cannot or chose not to take defensive driving, then you will have to go to court. The easiest way to win your court case is for the officer not to show. Try to delay the court date as long as possible. The longer the time is between when the officer wrote the ticket and when the court date happens, the more he or she will forget - unless you were a total jerk at the time of ticketing.

When you go to court dress for the occasion. Men wear a suit, and ladies should wear a business pantsuit or dress. You must act polite and respectful. If you go in with an attitude, the judge will see it and more easily believe the officer's testimony.

It is also important that if you set a court date, that you appear. Otherwise you risk a contempt or failure to appear charge as well as the cost of the original ticket and court costs. instead of getting out of a speeding ticket, you may find yourself in jail.
