Getting ready for making a speech
Making a speech is such a scary idea, isn't it? I've been gathering useful suggestions from books on public speaking about how to get ready for making a speech. I'll show you some of the most useful thoughts I've come up with...
My inner wimp and I have long been under the influence of a crippling dislike of public speaking. Making a speech is such a scary idea, isn't it? Earlier today I was told by my manager that I need to enhance my communication skills, as at this year's national conference I'll be required to be making a speech - and then doing more every once in a while. It is likely to be for senior managers so I'd better get in shape sharpish.
I'm in the programme to be making a speech on "Islam, political media and power struggles"... interesting, huh? I suspect I've been drawn into making a speech because my usually reliable team mate Angelina is sick, otherwise I'd be watching from the back of the room as usual. I suppose that's what they call karma. For someone of my position this is a very stretching opportunity, especially because of the people who will be in the room. It may well turn out that there's some business riding on what I say... better make sure I do well then! Me and "making a speech" are never really words that have fit well together, so it's going to be a tough feat to get myself organised. Whilst I'm not sure how I've managed to sidestep it thus far, I've never been involved with making a speech. I can't stop thinking of a former colleague of mine who had a stammer. Fair enough I've not ever had any difficulty in communicating with people 1-2-1, but I'm nervous to imagine what might happen when I make my speech. See, traditionally whenever anyone's making a speech, I'm the last person you'd think to consider asking.

I've been gathering useful suggestions from books on public speaking about how to get ready for making a speech. I'll show you some of the most useful thoughts I've come up with... A few great ideas on making a speech:
- Make sure my subject is really clear and appealing for the audience to understand.
- If at all possible, (which I'm not confident about in my case), try to connect a touch with the people in the room, so that they run the risk of in fact even taking something from what you've told them.
- Attempt to stay in control of what's going on with your body as you're making a speech. Try a meditation technique to help you prepare.
- Ground your speech on ideas with a wider sense of meaning, that fits in the context of the world as a whole. Your speech doesn't all have to sound as 'hard nosed' as worried rookie speakers often make out. People like information that's a bit different.

I've been looking around for workshops about public speaking and I found a few good ones, but I'm not convinced I'll get time to get there before it's too late unless my boss is able to send me. Well, it looks like I should get ready to do the best I can at making a speech. Enough of this, time for action. Soon I'll be making a speech (doesn't that sound strange?), so there's lots to do. Don't they say "Proper preparation prevents poor presentation?"
Assuming I survive the ordeal, I'll update you on how the whole thing goes down. Keep your fingers and toes tightly crossed for me! I'm picturing myself as a charismatic, capable speech maker who the audience love. Bye for now.

- I would love to hear what happened with your speech. I was better at speaking in front of large groups then 1-2-1. Sometimes when I felt my confidence waning during a speech (I knew the audience would pick that up) I would re-connect with my center. (From Aikido) tap or touch the center your navel just slightly and speak from there. It helps you feel grounded and actually enhances your voice.
