So the question is, which over the counter acne treatment is for you?
In part 1 of this article we looked at two active ingredients commonly found in most over the counter acne treatments: benzoyl peroxide and salicylic acid. We learned how both of these substances work on your skin. Now lets look at two more active ingredients:
Resorcinol: This substance is distilled from Brazilwood extract. (Brazilwood trees are listed as endangered species and are nearly extinct in their original range.) So why are we still using them for their extract? Just something to think about.
Resorcinol has been used as a topical antiseptic and disinfectant for some time now. Over the counter acne treatments are usually 2% resorcinol, but higher percentages of resorcinol are found in some prescription acne treatments. It is also in some medicated soaps.
Alcohol and acetone: Both of these substances are astringents (they dry up your skin); they also are antibacterial. They work by removing excess oil and sebum from the skin surface, helping to unclog pores and reducing the bacterial count.
This leads to less infection of pores because there are less of them that become clogged, (the clogging of pores is what leads to infection). So this all results in clearer skin. The thing to remember is to not dry your skin out by using too often. Using an astringent morning and evening should be enough.
Which product should you use? Start with a Salicylic acid product combined with an Astringent to maintain skin that isnt excessively oily, both will work to reduce the bacterial count on the skin surface. Try this. See how it works for you. You may not need stronger treatment.
If your acne persists and you think you may need more serious treatment, try a benzoyl peroxide cream; also combine it with an astringent. (But be careful not to over-apply either of the two.) This should help clear any remaining acne you still have.
In treating acne, it takes good skin cleansing habits and time, to clear up your skin--theres no shortcut. But each morning you wash and treat your skin, youll get closer to the day when you look in the mirror and realize your acne is gone.

What Foods Should You Avoid to Prevent Acne?
Food and acne: which foods can cause your skin to breakout? Let's take a look at what foods can cause acne and what you can start doing to prevent those breakouts. Common foods in western diets do in fact cause acne, but which ones? Well that just it--there are several misconceptions about which foods cause your skin to break out and which don't.Chocolate, for instance, is not supported by scientific studies as a cause of acne--although most people might believe that chocolate does make your skin break out--it actually doesn't.
Then there's milk, something you probably drink at least twice a week. Partially skimmed milk, instant breakfast drink, cottage cheese, and cream cheese have been known to cause acne flare-ups; the current thought is that certain sex hormones and bovine (cow) Insulin-like Growth Factor (IGF-1) could be partly responsible.
What kind of Carbs can cause breakouts? Refined sugars and processed foods could definitely be the culprits responsible for your breakouts. These foods all have a high-glycemic load, (they're rapidly digested by your system) which results in an overload in blood sugar (blood glucose)--this stimulates secretion of insulin--which then causes a release of IGF-1 (insulin-like growth factor). And IGF-1 itself, has direct effects on several skin processes that result in acne.
When an experiment was done to see if a low-glycemic load diet would improve acne and lower weight, scientists found that the avoidance of high-glycemic load foods such as junk food and fast food resulted in improved, clearer skin and the added benefit of decreased weight.
Another cause has been seen to be poor intake of Vitamins A and E. Low levels of vitamin A and vitamin E have been seen in persons with moderate to severe acne. So eating foods that are high vitamins A and E could help naturally treat your acne.
So now you know what foods to avoid to keep acne away. Also remember that it is important to maintain a good cleansing regimen so that you reduce the bacteria on your skin, which will also help you avoid acne breakouts.
