Cut the cord and get rid of cable tv

Are you looking to save some money on some of your household bills? Well one way to cut out at least $50 per month is to call your local cable company and tell them no thanks you have found an alternative to cable. This is something that I did just a month ago, I was paying $85 per month for digital cable, I had to pay for the box rental, cable service, taxes and any movies that I rented. Last month I woke up and said enough is enough and found an alternative to cable which is much cheaper.

Websites to watch tv shows online for free

There are a number of sites available where you can watch TV online. Here are a few sites; CBS, FOX, NBC, HULU, ABC, these networks have the shows available online for you to watch. Now keep in mind you may sacrifice on quality if that is the case you may need to increase your internet speed and bandwidth. There would be an increased cost however the money you save on cable should cover that. Of course you are not going to get live sporting events, there are other sites like the NFL network were you can buy a package. There are other sites out there that stream sporting events however I am not sure that they are legal, however they are available. I will not list them just because of the legalities involved, just know that they are out there.

If you live in Canada as I do, then you can check out CTV, Global Network and City TV just to name a few if you want to stream shows on your computer.

How to watch Hulu in Canada

Hulu is a great site with a lot of content however those living outside the U.S. are unable to watch it because they are blocked. There is a way around this, if you live outside the United States you can sign up to a VPN (Virtual Private Network)

Definition from Wikipedia

"A virtual private network (VPN) is a computer network that uses a public telecommunication infrastructure such as the Internet to provide remote offices or individual users with secure access to their organization's network. It aims to avoid an expensive system of owned or leased lines that can be used by only one organization."

Basically if you live outside the U.S. you can sign on with a VPN located in the U.S. and access Hulu because it will show that you are accessing their website from the U.S. There are many free VPNs there are also some that cost as well, typically I have seen that you can sign up for about $5 per month.

Watch movies on Netflix

CHeaper alternative to cable tv

There are other services to choose from when trying to access other content online. I use Netflix myself and it costs me $8 per month. This has a nice variety of movies, TV shows, kids programing, family programing, comedy etc. Netflix does not carry a lot of new movies that are popular, however they have a large assortment of content to choose from. I would suggest streaming Netflix from your Wii, Xbox or PS3, I find it works a bit better than streaming it from your computer. Anyways check it out, when you sign up you can actually get a month for free as a trial run to see how you like it.

Why I got rid of Cable

I found that my cable bill seemed to go up every month and I rarely watched TV. I was paying $85 per month do I decided to take action and cancel my cable saving me $1020 per year. I use various sites to watch TV shows as well I do use Netflix at a cost of $8 per month. I stream Netflix onto my Wii on the upstairs tv and stream it on my Xbox downstairs. It works out great for what I need it for. If you are looking to make the switch to an alternative from cable then make sure to do your research and find out what fits best for you.

Millions cut the cord in 2011

According to a Canadian research firm the Convergence Consulting Group, 2.65 million people cut their cords between 2008 - 2011, cable and satellite only added about 113,000 subscribers. This is growing evidence that viewers are finding alternative and cheaper ways to watch television.

I'm about to cut cable. My question is will my added digital antenna interfere with my cable internet signal?

We were paying about 300 per month for phone, internet, and satellite with Bell. Now paying about 60 for internet, 3 for phone, 8 for netflix. We added a Boxee and an antenna. We're getting 25 digital channels on the antenna for free. We don't have quite the content we had but it's more than adequate. Awesome in fact and MUCH cheaper.

Nice lens! We cut the cord several months ago and love it! I've been meaning to write about our story, since it has been so wonderful and I'm trying to convince my mother and other family members to take the leap. Our over the air HD is 100 times better looking than the cable picture we used to get and it's free. Our antenna was super cheap, and with all the Internet programming available we never miss it. Merry Christmas!

I've been trying to get family to lower their cable package to 'local' box-less basic cable since they're paying over $60 a month for it. We also want to keep the bundle since it lowers the cost of our internet bill.

Everyone should downgrade or outright cancel their cable. You'd be surprised how little you'll miss it...even if you don't go the DVD/Netflix/Hulu/etcetera route.

I've considered it. Comcast cable keeps going up every month too it seems. However, I recently called them and they gave me the promo price for another 6 months, so for now I'm keeping it. I am working on installing an antenna though which will let me pick up the local stations for free, like CBS, FOX, etc. This is more feasible in an urban area though.

Someday, cable will be a thing of the past. I'm sure of it... Everything will be delivered via the internet. I'm just not sure how long that will take.

    Great lens, and angel blessed!

I pay $8 a month for basic cable. I won't get rid of it because it makes our internet cheaper then it would be without it! :)

This is BRILLIANT. We haven't had cablevision forever- too costly, too much mindless junk. Great ideas on how to watch tv programming without cablevision- I miss House MD. This lens should be on the front page of the news lol..
