Attack the visible clutter first

You can worry about drawers and cupboards later. Your main aim here is to reduce or eliminate all the visible clutter that you can see. This includes junk mail, books, clothes, basically anything that does not belong in the room in which you have found it.

Your bedroom is not the dumping ground for - laundry, sewing, projects, homework, it is for sleeping and relaxing in.

Your home is your sanctuary and should be filled with things that you love. Remember this as you continue your journey on getting rid of clutter.

Getting Rid of Clutter by using Laundry Baskets

Boxes or bags will work just as well

I never seem to have boxes lying around, so I like to use those cheap plastic laundry baskets, either the tall round ones or the short tub style ones.

Take your laundry basket and start in one room. Put anything that DOES NOT BELONG IN THAT ROOM into your basket.

Go from room to room, filling up your basket. You may need to have several laundry baskets or boxes on hand. Papers, books, toys, clothing, and so on, can all go into the basket. You might of course need more than one basket, if so, use one for clothes and the rest for everything else.

Getting Rid of Clutter by Being Sensible

Learn to be practical

Ok now you have all your clutter in all these laundry baskets. Now what? Go and put the contents of those baskets away. Do you use these items a lot? Then store them near where you would look for them. Telephone books should live NEAR the telephone. Laundry cleaning items should be in the laundry.
Perhaps you need to install some coat hooks for all those jackets and coats that are constantly used. This will stop them draping themselves over the backs of chairs, or ironing boards that haven't been put away.
Besides, it stops the cat from lying on your clothing!

Getting Rid of Clutter using the LUST principle

Love It? Use It? Does it make you SMILE? (If No then)Toss It!

This is a great method to use whether you use it on a drawer in the kitchen, or your wardrobe in your closet. Getting rid of clutter should be fun, not torture, so try this approach to get you over the hump of starting.

As you pick up each item, apply the LUST principle to it. It either needs to be loved or liked, used fairly often, makes you smile when you see it, or you will toss it. Have fun with this!

Don't concern yourself that as soon as you chuck something, that your long lost Aunt Freda will ring up asking to borrow that obscure item you just donated to charity. The world will still rotate on its axis tomorrow. Promise.
