Getting rid of head lice - simple home remedies that work!

Ugh! Your child (most likely) has new friend! Oops! I guess it is time to start getting rid of head lice. Head lice are very, very common and almost 10% of young children get them one time or another. I've been there, done that! From having them as a child to getting rid of head lice with my own child, I've experienced the frustration of trying to eliminate them. I was unsuccessful using over the counter remedies until I found home remedies for lice that actually work.

Getting rid of head lice - Know your enemy

I say enemy to be nice. I hate lice! Before you come up with a plan and start getting rid of head lice, here are a few things you should know.

Head lice don't have wings, and contrary to popular belief they don't fry from head to head. They use their legs to attach to hair shaft and feed off of human blood. They love humans! They love the warm environment of hair and neck. Once they attach, female head lice lay eggs. These eggs are known as nits and are the most difficult to remove. If they incubate successfully, nits turn into baby-nymphs and from there into full blown head lice.

Getting rid of head lice - How do home remedies for head lice work?

Once you start getting rid of head lice, you're actually trying to smother them and in a way, make them "dizzy" enough so that they can slide off the hair shaft easily. Carrier oils or shampoo used in home remedies for head lice have that role. Once that happens, other ingredients used help disinfect and cleanse the scalp and hair.

Getting rid of lice - Thyme shampoo

Kill Lice and remove Nits, NOW with Vickie's Home Remedy Head Lice Treatment Alternative Care Recipe!

Ingredients

* 1 teaspoon of ordinary hair shampoo (baby shampoo will do)
* 2-3 drops of essential thyme oil

When we say thyme, we usually think of food and its wide use in food preparation. However, thyme and essential thyme oil are great antiseptics and disinfectants, and also a great natural insecticide. It shouldn't be used undiluted so you need to this:

Preparation

* Mix the essential thyme oil with shampoo
* Massage the scalp and apply all over the hair
* Leave on for 5 minutes and wash off using lukewarm water
* Following the instructions, use a commercial head louse shampoo

Here's another home remedy:

Head lice oil

Ingredients

* 10 drops of rosemary essential oil
* 10 drops of lavender essential oil
* 2 tablespoons of olive oil

Olive oil serves as a carrier oil, it dilutes the other essential oils keeping them from quick evaporation.

Rosemary and lavender will kill and smother the lice.
