The idea of weight training for martial arts in the past was, nah. I think that originally changed with Bruce Lee, but in more modern times the UFC has shown that the more skilled practitioner can still be beaten by the better athlete. When thinking about training for MMA, weight lifting has to be part of the formula.

Cylcle Your Workouts!
If you're going to weight train for mma, I recommend cycling your workouts. Start off doing 4 weeks of heavy lifting, 4 weeks of medium intensity, and then follow it up with 4 weeks of body weight movements to build endurance. Some of the links below will be able to help set you on the right track.
