Getting Older: Advice from an Octogenarian

Gail Lee Martin's Advice for Seniors

My mom, Gail Lee Martin, loves to write and loves to give advice. At 85, she has lots of experience, and she shared what she has learned by writing articles for the eHow website. Many of her topics are good for a senior audience, but other ages will find tips they can use, seasoned with her 85 years of living.

She grew up in the Kansas Flint Hills at a time when water was pumped by hand into a bucket and carried into the house. Having a "can do" attitude and a practical outlook, she shares some methods that may seem old-fashioned. In a time of recession, these low-tech ideas and thrifty methods are gaining in popularity. We need to learn from our elders, so take a look at Gail's advice below.

Your mother has great tips that are still timeless even with modern conveniences. My own family also lived the same way before immigrating, doing most of the cooking and cleaning by hand like we've done for generations. There's a lot of life left in older age too and even if you're not physically as active, you can still find ways to enjoy something new each day.
