Now You Need to Get Traffic

Let's assume that you've created a lens with quality content; a lens that deserves traffic and will offer something useful to its readers. If your lens doesn't meet this requirement, stop reading this right now and go make it better. I'll still be here.

For those of you who have worked hard to make a great lens, here are some steps to help you get some traffic. It's not instant; it takes time to build good traffic, and you have to keep working at it. Be patient.

This is MY to-do list for new lenses. This lens is here to help me remember what to do after I publish. It's mainly for my use, but feel free to read it. I'll be adding to it as I learn more. Also, there are lots of really good lenses out there on getting traffic.

What Now?

puzzle pieces

You need to get the word out to the world that you have a terrific new lens. Where to start? I once thought about putting a magnetic sign on the side of my car, so that everyone would see it and come visit. I really do this with one of my main sites that's meant to be local, but it won't work for every new lens that I build. Besides, I want more exposure than just the folks here around town.

Submit Your Lens to Social Bookmarking and Networking Sites

These places are a great way to begin to build some backlinks and get a little traffic at the same time.
Digg
Easy to use, but it takes a while to build up enough of a following to bring you much traffic. An occasional lens of mine gets a lot of non-fan traffic, but most of it is from my "friends."
Stumbleupon
I apparently abused my privileges at Stumbleupon. For some time,I haven't been able to submit anything. I read somewhere that if submit too many urls with the same domain name, it redflags. Ooops.
Facebook
Haven't tried this yet, but I'll be exploring it. I've heard mixed reviews.
Stumpedia
"The Human-Powered Search Engine"
Gather
Post short articles and review the posts of others.
Technorati
I have't used this. Need to explore.

Good directory for lenses.
Squidom

Isle of Squid
Created by Captain Squid, another great backlink.

Don't know much about this yet, I've just joined.

Don't know much about this. Some lensmasters love it.
Blogger
I've used this. Simple. I've heard that you can be locked for having too many repeats of one domain name (like Squidoo). That seems like a problem if you're trying to promote lenses.
Rocking the Squid
I need to explore this more.
