What It Is, How to Do It

First, lets take a look at what acne is. What can cause it? Acne is clogged pores (whiteheads and blackheads), cysts or nodules, or pimples that can appear on the face, neck, chest, back, upper arms or shoulders. There are different kinds of acne defined by the type, severity and characteristics of the break out. Acne mostly effects teens, but can carry into adulthood, and often adults developed acne.

There are several different types of creams and lotions that can be used to treat acne. You generally don't need a prescription for these. The creams and lotions are usually applied directly to the trouble spots, showing results after several applications of the product.

You can also purchase special cleansers and soaps to treat acne. These are medicated with acne fighting formulas to help clear and prevent break outs. You simply wash your face with these, getting results after several uses.

Vitamin treatments are sometimes used. Mainly vitamin E is used to treat acne. You just take a capsule daily, seeing results after several weeks or months of use. You may also be prescribed medications by your dermatologist to fight acne. These too are capsules or pills taken by mouth. Sometimes a dermatologist may prescribe medicated creams or lotions that are stronger than what you can buy over the counter.

Natural treatments are also an option when fighting acne. Some natural treatments include, increasing the variety of fresh fruits and vegetables that you eat, and drinking plenty of water. Drinking water helps keep your skin hydrated, reducing the shedding of dead skin cells which can clog pores.

Another natural treatment is reducing your stress levels by exercising or using relaxation techniques. You can also reduce your intake of carbohydrates and refined sugars. These cause your body to produce insulin, which in turn raises male hormones in your body that can cause acne. Reduce your intake of dairy products and red meats. You'll also want to avoid caffeine and other stimulates like those found in chocolate. Changing your diet can be effective in fighting acne.

You may also want to try getting plenty of fresh air and sunshine. Sunshine increases vitamin D in your body. Vitamin D is essential for healthy skin. Be careful not to get sun burn as this causes thickening of the outer layer of your skin, and causes it not to shed dead cells effectively. This can block pores just adding to the problem.

Acne can be unsightly and embarrassing, but you don't have to suffer because of a break out. You can buy over the counter products to help fight and prevent acne. You can purchase the right soaps and cleansers. Simply modifying your diet and reducing stress can be effective cures. Get some fresh air and some sunshine. Of course, if all else fails, you can seek the advice of a dermatologist and find a treatment that works for you.
