Ever hear weird noises in your home late at night? Ever wonder if there may be spirits living amongst us? There are experts out there who may want to hear your story--and they may be able to tell you exactly what it is you've seen or heard.

While they don't exactly carry proton packs and battle ghouls, real life ghost hunters do exist. Ghost hunters are hired by home owners and other people to investigate structures and houses believed to be haunted. These locations of interest are thoroughly investigated by ghost hunters who survey the property and discuss the paranormal experiences with the owner. They then use electronic equipment, which they feel is capable of detecting paranormal activity, to read if such activity is present. A typical ghost hunter will use equipment to help track the apparent paranormal beings. They are known to use an ion generator, which is a device that charges the air with electricity.

Ghost hunters believe this device helps spirits move around. Ghost hunters will also use a white noise generator, which is an audio device that creates a static background noise believed by such hunters to make spirits create noises and electronic voice phenomena. They also use digital thermometers, electromagnetic field scanners to detect any energy in the air, and night vision or infrared digital video cameras in the hopes to catch proof on film.

With the increase of popularity and interest in the ghost hunting profession, a reality show entitled Ghost Hunters was created in 2004. The television program follows two self-proclaimed ghost hunters who work as plumbers during the day and paranormal trackers by night. The two hunters call their organization The Atlantic Paranormal Society and are mostly hired by people who believe their homes or businesses are haunted. The program has faced much criticism by skeptics who say TAPS' methods of tracking paranormal activity is unscientific and the duo's inability to find any substantial proof.
