Dreams and Dust

All across the desert southwest lie the signs of long-ago dreams which ended in dust. Empty shells of once raucous saloons, collapsing remains of general stores, the bones of abandonned mines... these are the ghost towns of Arizona.

Before They Died...

Before these towns "died" and became ghost towns, most were mining communities. Arizona mines mostly produced copper, but also silver and some gold, and later turquoise. Train depots where these goods were loaded and shipped from also had towns nearby which have since dwindled or disappeared, such as Anita.

Many "ghost" towns have experienced a revival, becoming havens for artistic communities. Examples include Bisbee and Jerome.
