How and Where to Find Ghosts

Have you ever wondered if your home was haunted? Strange knocks, smells, and sounds don't automatically spell "ghost", but it might be helpful to know what to look for to be able to confirm if you do have a disturbance.

Ghost hunting is quickly becoming one of the most popular hobbies in the US. Thanks to shows like "Ghost Hunters" on the SciFi network, amateur ghost hunters are gathering in haunted locations to try to record any sort of evidence on tape or photo.

Ghost hunting is not as complicated as it sounds. In fact, you can search for ghosts in almost any location with just a few simple gadgets.

The following sections should help you choose which gadgets you want to use, where you want to search, and how you should conduct a search. It's not as hard as you might think!

By the way, the ghost shown here is one of the most famous photographed ghosts. Her name is Dorothy Walpole, and she is known as the Brown Lady of Raynham Hall.

Ghost Hunting Equipment

EMF Meters

Electromagnetic field meters, or EMF meters, are one of the most common pieces of ghost-hunting equipment used in investigations.

EMF meters are typically used to measure electromagnetic field radiation levels around power lines, indoor wiring, home applicances, and other appliances.

Because spirit activity tends to cause fluctuations in electromagnetic fields, ghost hunters use EMF meters to detect possible paranormal activity in a haunted location. Any fluctuation beyond normal range is suspect.

While they're considered a reliable means of detection, they should be used with caution. Too often, false positive readings are a result of interference from electrical wiring, conduits, or appliances in use in the environment. When using an EMF meter, always rule out such interference before drawing any conclusions. Locations that do not have electricity are probably free from any "ordinary" interference--any significant EMF readings may be interpreted as paranormal activity.

EMF meters can cost anywhere from under $100 to several hundred dollars. The best meters for the beginner don't need to cost a lot of money, but you'll need to decide how you plan to use it. Some units use only visual alerts to spiking EMF fields, while others have an auditory alarm that might come in handy in dark locations.

One of the most popular EMF meters for ghost hunters is the TriField Natural EM Meter. It is capable of ignoring man-made radiation sources, which can add credibility to any results you may obtain on a ghost hunt.

Mini Voice Recorders

One of the most entertaining pieces of evidence you can gather on a ghost hunt are EVPs, or electronic voice phenomena.

Using a small voice-activated tape recorder to record sounds is one of the easiest ways to gather evidence of the paranormal. It can often pick up any unusual noises that might be missed by the human ear.

When you are on a ghost hunt, initiate a conversation. Introduce yourself, and ask if there is anyone present who would like to speak. Ask questions, such as "what is your name?", "how old are you?", and others. You may be surprised what you hear when you play back the recording.

You might consider purchasing a digital voice recorder. For the same price as a tape recorder, you can record many more hours without messing around with tapes.

Also, there are software programs available that can help you "clean up" recordings and isolate any unidentified sounds you may capture.

Ghost Hunting Rules

10 Important Do's and Don'ts

Here are ten rules that will help you conduct a successful ghost-hunting expedition.

1. Bring extra batteries. Ghosts or spirits need energy to manifest or materialize. Often, they'll get that energy from the batteries in your camera or other recording equipment. If you notice that the battery in your camera has suddenly lost power, be alert to other changes in the room, such as temperature.

2. Before taking pictures, clean the lens. Be sure that your camera lens is as clean as possible and free from dust particles that could be mistaken for "spirit activity".

3. No smoking. When you are photographing a location, cigarette smoke can show up on pictures and be misinterpreted.

4. Bring a buddy. Never investigate a location by yourself. If you get into trouble or get injured, it's a good idea to have a friend with you.

5. No drinking. Sure, it's tempting to have a couple of drinks for a bit of courage, but it can seriously cloud your judgement. Stay sober and clear-headed.

6. Bring snacks. Have something handy to nibble on if you're going to conduct a long investigation.

7. Interview any potential witnesses. If possible, try to talk to anyone who has experienced paranormal activity in the location where you will be investigating. This will give you an idea of what to look for.

8. Clean up. After the investigation, be sure you gather all belongings and trash and take it with you. Leave the area clean.

9. Be respectful. You are investigating locations where people used to live and work. Even though they've passed on, you are still a guest!

10. No trespassing. ALWAYS get permission to investigate a location. Remember, some haunted locations are private property and should be avoided unless you get specific permission from the owners.
