Ghost Plant Physiology

Ghost Plants are parasitic: unlike most plants which gain energy through photosynthesis, the ghost plant or Monotropa Uniflora, depends on host fungi to photosynthesize energy. It therefore does not need to live in sunlight, and can inhabit darker areas of forests. Its usual color is white but can be pale pink or speckled black, occasionally red. It flowers from June to October. Monotropa uniflora is found in most mainland States, with the exception of Nevada, Arizona, Utah, Colorado, Wyoming and South Dakota. Monotropa means 'once turned' from the habit of the flower to start life hanging down, then rotate to face upwards.

Ghost Plant Medicinal Uses

The Ghost Plant root, although generally considered poisonous, has been used as a tonic, a sedative, an anti-inflammatory and an antispasmodic. It has been found to reduce fevers, rather like quinine, to quiet the psychotic or those with disassociative disorders, and to relieve spasms such as lockjaw. The plant juice was used as an eyewash by Native Americans. Chewing the root was reputed to ease toothache.
