Ghosts, mysteries, adventure, romance, intrigue ... my Australian story all in a page turning non-fiction book (or e-book)!

Ranked #6,388 in Books, Poetry & Writing, #230,546 overall

Experience with me a true story of adventure, romance, ghosts, mysteries, mystical meaning set in Australia, New York, New Zealand, Regency England,Northern Italy ... and on the High Seas.

My true story is one of ghosts, mysteries, adventure, intrigue, insurrection and betrayal, unsung heroes, drama on the High Seas, more than a few mystical moments and more than one unexpected romance, at a time when I found myself down on my luck without a penny to my name.

Then Granny Fitz, whoever she was, changed all that. Granny's ghost appears unexpectedly at Chapter 3 and her secret continues right through until the final chapter (28).

As if swept up on a magic carpet I'm transported from a caravan in the Aussie bush, first to New York, then to Regency England then, finally, to romantic Northern Italy - Venice, Milan, Sanremo on the Italian Riviera, Florence, Sienna, even Rome - the mystery unfolding as I share my life-changing adventure with readers. It's a compelling page-turning read.

However you will not need luck, as you have a gift for writing."- THE WRITERS LITERARY & PUBLISHING SERVICE, USA

The mystery begins with a rare old book and a family secret (or three)

In a rare limited edition book published 40 years ago by a bookshop in Tasmania, Australia, I find a reference to a doctor and his wife who arrived in Van Diemen's Land (Tasmania), from England in the early days of settlement under suspicious circumstances. It was believed they were persuaded to leave their homeland on a life pension, to silence them because of what they knew about King George III - the one who lost the American War of Independence - a secret that could have changed the whole course of history.

Meanwhile my mother decides to research her family tree. She uncovers three secret messages passed down through the family with clues to a mystery which, incredibly, could throw some light on the doctor's secret.

Then I too become caught up in the drama which unfolds even as I write the story of my own adventures of the past 10 years, of bankruptcy and my struggle to survive living in a friend's old caravan parked by the roadside in the Aussie bush.

Close encounters of the romantic kind

My story moves between the present and the past for the first half of the book and eventually merges into one. There are other historical personages who, although relatively unknown, played significant roles on the world stage some 200 years ago, unsung heroes who have stories which need to be told. Fascinating stories emerge of early links with the Australian aborigines and the New Zealand Maori.

Then unexpectedly I'm off to New York for a meeting with a beautiful school teacher where I live for six romantic months. Then I'm in Regency England following the mystery. Some time later my story has me in Northern Italy living for four months with an Italian nurse with the voice of Sophia Loren. I find I've come full circle and everything falls into place to suggest a shocking conclusion to a mystery just begging to be told.

Clues & answers turn up even as I write

Throughout the book I share with the reader my experiences and my ongoing adventure even as events occur. Along the way clues and new leads emerge, often as I'm writing my story, as if this is a mystery that wants to be solved. Now and again strange events and spiritual happenings surface, Shirley MacLaine style. Even my time in the United States and Italy take on a greater significance within the wider context of the story that I hadn't even imagined at the time.

Important!

I found myself booked on a plane across the Pacific with literally everything I owned packed into two bulging suitcases and one carry-on overnight bag. My thoughts had been of the precious cargo I was carrying in my stowed luggage, the files surrounding a mystery which had fallen into my lap just before leaving Australia.
Important!

The 'Mary Ann', a female convict ship carrying six children and one free woman, lands a boat on an uninhabited coast away from the main settlement about fifteen miles from their port of destination, for no apparent reason ... Her departure does not seem to have been recorded in England. No ships musters could be found. She leaves hastily "under strange circumstances" without the usual papers, sailing over a month in advance of the other ships in the fleet and making the trip in record time.
Important!

As we taxi to the terminal I imagine her waiting there for me and wondering what she's thinking. I'm acutely aware that in only a few minutes I'll get to know what she really looks like and what it's like to speak to each other in person, to look into each others' eyes. I begin to panic about how we'll greet each other, with a polite handshake, a nervous touch on the arm, a big hug, a self-conscious peck on the cheek? Time, which has been infuriatingly slow for the past 2 days, is now racing...

"I read your book, couldn't put it down really! I'd read until my eyes said NO MORE! I just admire greatly your way of weaving the past and the present so skilfully, crossing them over like a beautiful tapestry." - C.W., Queenscliff, AUSTRALIA -

About the author

After a career in advertising, working as a copywriter and Creative Director for a number of Melbourne advertising agencies then in my own freelance business, I now write from home on the Internet. 'Vow of Silence' is my first book which I've self-published. I live alone in a small seaside fishing village famous for its mussel farms and annual Mussel Festival and Celtic Festival, just across the bay from Melbourne, close to my two daughters and two adorable grand-daughters. I am the author of both this lens (and 85 others) and the book. To read my other lenses click on 'aussiescribe' at the top right corner of this page.
