G.I. Joe: A Little History about this American Icon

G.I. Joe was first introduced to Americans in 1964 after being inspired by Robert Mitchum's "The Story of GI Joe". Since then, all generations have enjoyed what has become an American icon.

The initial product offering represented four of the branches of the U.S. Armed Forces with the Action Soldier (Army), Action Sailor (Navy), Action Pilot (Air Force) and Action Marine (Marines). The term G.I. stands for Government Issue and became a generic term for U.S. soldiers, especially ground forces. The development of G.I. Joe led to the coining of the term "action figure".

When first introduced, only metal action-type figures were widely available. The concept of a life-like action figure was totally new. With 21 moving parts and 75 different products, the G.I. Joe sold over 2 million units in the first year.

    Although I am now 33 I can never let go of my G.I. Joe passion. I recently bought the re-released 25th aniversary figures when they were in stores a couple years ago.
