What Is The Giant Gourami?
With such a large size an aquarium should be chosen to match. At four years of age the giant gourami will be half a meter in length. The larger the better is a good attitude toward buying their tank. Giant gouramies are also kept in outdoor ponds by some people.
Although often kept alone this gourami enjoy the company of other fish. The same species or other large growing fish from the falily Osphronemidae are good tank mates.
The Osphronemus goramy is a an omniverous fish with a taste for water plants. In an aquarium these fish will have their favorite foods. Besides the regular green vegetables some will appreciate fruit such as watermelon. Prepared dry foods should be high in spirulina algae complemented with some dried worms. Common live foods are also appreciated but should only be fed in small amounts.
Breeding follows the smale pattern as smaller Osphronemidae fish. A nest is constructed from floating plants, twigs and bubbles. When in breeding condition these fish develop some black areas over their body. After spawning the male takes on responsibility for hatching the eggs, which usualy takes only one day.
