A Chance for Giants and Giant Wannabes to Sound Off
I know a lot of other people want to be Giant Squids too. But why? What drives people to spend this kind of time and effort? And after they get to Giant Squiddiness, what do they like about it? I want to know. Please, Giants and Giants-to-be, let me know what you think.
P.S. My son astutely pointed out that this is not a photo of a squid. He feels strongly that the cuttlefish must be mentioned here (yeah, it IS a cuttlefish...).
Why I Want to Be a Giant Squid
1. I'll never run out of ink again.
2. I want to announce to strangers that I'm a Giant Squid just to see their reactions.
3. I want that really cool Giant badge on my lenses.
4. I'll finally get to learn the Secret Tentacle-shake.
5. I'll walk just a little taller than before.
6. I want to be in the company of super-duper lensmasters.
7. I might become a better swimmer.
8. I can wear lots of big jangly bracelets on my giant tentacles.
9. I think Giant Squids might get better parking spaces.
Help Me Come Up with Number 10 and 11, 12, 13....
Why do YOU want to be a Giant Squid?
Everyone has his own reasons for wanting to build lenses and to become a Giant Squid. What drives you on your quest toward Gianthood? You don't have to be close to Gianthood to answer.
Because the Giants have been so lovely and helpful, I'd hate to disappoint!

Yes, but only if that guaranteed me the ability to make 50 great lenses so I could be on of those wonderful Giant Squids. I have a long way to go and maybe eating some squid would help me get there.

In response to jeffreyV(Squiddit) regarding Giant Squids being cannibals: If Aliens visiting Earth just happened to choose Jeffrey Dahmer randomly as a typical human specimen to study, what do you suppose they would think when they looked into his freezer? Yeah, I know, you have to suppose the Aliens visited quite a few years ago.

Certainly- but only if well prepared. If Stargazer brings the squid, I'll bring dessert!

Sure, if they want to. I have a lens on a lovely garlic stir-fried squid with ramen recipe. This lens also features a great giant squid weather vane which I think should be a Giant perk!

Australian researchers have found that the elusive giant squid may literally eat their own. Using a unique DNA based process, a University of Tasmania team of experts tested the stomach contents of a 190kg male giant squid specimen caught by fishermen off Tasmania 7 years ago...
The analysis of these contents revealed the presence of three tentacles and twelve squid beak fragments. DNA from stomach juices and tentacle fragments all belonged to the giant squid, also known as Architeuthis dux. DNA analysis of the beak fragments was inconclusive.
PhD student and research team leader Bruce Deagle explained to the press that these DNA results provided a basis for future study, especially collection of such data from the giant squid and other rare species.
Australian Antarctic Division research scientist Simon Jarmon explained that although the findings don't eliminate the chance of accidental self-ingestion, they do in all likelihood indicate the first time giant squid cannibalism has been demonstrated "reasonably conclusively".

mmm...not this one! That would be kind of tyrannical anyway; a cruel way of assuring there are no NEW Giant Squids.

No one should ever be forced to eat squid... it's horrible, rubbery, and just generally not particularly pleasant to eat at all!

This concerns me. I love calamari, but when I am a giant squid (ten lenses to go) will that make me a cannibal? This might be a problem!

The_Homeopath says:
I'm allergic to calamari. I can only appreciate the squids from a non-internal standpoint.
