Giant Microbes Plushies Could Just be Disturbingly Cute!
GIANTmicrobes: Cute or Disturbing Toys?
Who in the world thought that deadly microbes that make up illnesses and viruses such as malaria or chicken pox would make good plushies? Whoever came up with Giant Microbes was a genius. They make good gifts for geeks or anyone who has a slightly odd sense of humor. They could also be potentially fun ways to teach kids about diseases.
How can you hate them, anyway? They're so cute. They're fun to throw at people, too. "Ha, I infected you with the flu!"
E. Coli Giant Microbes Plushie
Giant Microbes E. coli (Escherichia coli) Ailmentaries Plush
Amazon Price: $5.89 (as of 10/11/2008)
What an adorable specimen of E. Coli! Look, he's even smiling at you.
Of course, you'll want to overlook the fact that real E. Coli would give you nasty cramps and bloody diarrhea... avoid eating undercooked ground beef!

They rock!!! I am totally a microbiology geek... I will be getting one for each of my kids for x-mas stockings and definately a salmonella for me. As for the "ick" group you should try to open up and laugh a little...or maybe learn a little... there are soooo many helpful microbes in the world. WE would be nowhere without them. They make all sorts of foods, clean up pollution and oil spills and they give us alot of our vitamins and minerals by helping to process our food and releasing good stuff for us....that is all...

Too bad a sense of humor can't be grown in a petri dish - the folks in the naysayer column could use a dose. Giant Microbes are awesome.

I think they're great as gifts but also could be useful as teaching tools for kids. Get them interested in science in a fun way.

Cute! And most E. coli aren't pathogenic anyway. There are millions of helpful E. coli living in your gut right now!

Cute. But formost a great educaional toy. Just b/c we cant see the microbes with our bare eyes does not mean they dont exist. A great intoduction for kids into biology.
We would not be able to live w/o bacteria, we would not exist without the rest below us inthe food chain. We rely heavily on science today and the friendlier we make the subject, kids will take to it.

I used to work in a microbiology lab & tutored micro, and I am very germ-aware, so I think these toys are cool...microlicious! By all means, let's educate people, especially kids on what they can't see can definitely harm them.

WHAT AN INCREDIBLE IDEA!
Hey, I bought a set to help teach our grandchildren.
Wow, were they amazed. They learned so much and I was able to help them understand about diseases and how to protect themselves from harm.
They are more than adorable, they are needed in this crazy world we live in! Some people just don't get it about sanitation and hygiene.

At first I wanted to say 'Ew!' but hey, if those nasty, overdoses of sugar-coated marshmallow known as Peeps can be cute in plush form, why not? :)

Ick, what a disgusting concept.
Anna says:
What a waste of plush. Seriously, do people care about this? I don't find it cute at all. Why make infection education fun? Whatever happened to showing kids scary pictures from the infectious disease atlas to make sure they really GET IT? Buying for my kid would be like saying: "They're fun to throw at people, too. 'Ha, I infected you with HIV/syphilis/gonorrhea!'"

funny for adults and gags but I don't think we should desensitize our children when it comes to harmful germs and deadly bacterias. Isn't that what we did with violence- that worked out real well, huh.

Herpes Giant Microbe
Giant Microbes Herpes Microbe
Amazon Price: $6.50 (as of 10/11/2008)
Fun to toss around in the office, but I don't recommend giving this little guy as a present to your significant other. They might get the wrong idea.
Bed Bug Giant Microbes Plush
BED BUG GIANT MICROBE PLUSH
Amazon Price: $6.95 (as of 10/11/2008)
Chances are you already go to bed at night with bed bugs, so why not take this cuddly creature to bed with you? This one won't bite!
Malaria Giant Microbes Toy
Giant Microbes Malaria (Plasmodium falciparum) Tropicals Plush
Amazon Price: $6.95 (as of 10/11/2008)
Malaria never looked this cute before!
Real malaria is quite nasty, of course. Symptoms include chills, fever, sweating, nausea, cramps, and generally feeling miserable. Quite deadly. Try to avoid getting acquainted with mosquitoes in areas where malaria is an epidemic.
Ear Ache Giant Microbes Plushie
EAR ACHE GIANT MICROBE
Amazon Price: $6.95 (as of 10/11/2008)
I'm rather fond of Ear Ache. It looks like a cute, fuzzy peach. The vacant stare is a little unnerving, though.

Stomach Ache Giant Microbes Toy
STOMACH ACHE GIANT MICROBE PLUSH
Amazon Price: $6.95 (as of 10/11/2008)
At first I thought this looked like a weird subway sandwich with eyeballs, but it's actually stomach ache.
Somehow I don't think real stomach ache looks much like this, but I'm sure this plushie is much cuter than the real thing.
Black Death Giant Microbes Plush
Giant Microbes, Black Death
Amazon Price: $7.95 (as of 10/11/2008)
This is the adorably disturbing Black Death plushie. I will hug it and squeeze it and call it George.
Bubonic plague is, of course, very unpleasant. Fortunately the last major outbreak was several hundred years ago. Let's try to keep it that way.
Pimple Giant Microbes Plushie
Giant Microbes Pimple - Acne (Propionibacterium acnes) Maladies Plush
Amazon Price: $6.95 (as of 10/11/2008)
Good grief, they even made pimples cute!
Giant Flea Plushie
Giant Microbes Flea (Ctenocephalides Felis) Critters Plush
Amazon Price: $6.95 (as of 10/11/2008)
OK, I'll admit it, this thing isn't very cute at all. A flea is a flea, and fleas are disgusting little varmints. But I'm sure someone would appreciate this little fella.
Skelanimals
Want Some Skelanimal Toys?
If you like Giant Microbes, you'll probably like Skelanimals too! However, SusanVillasLewis has proven that the reverse is not necessarily true. :)-
Skelanimals: Dead Animals Need Love Too!!

The cutest bags of bones around are the Skelanimals! They're looking for a home with a special someone to love them, but not just anyone. They need people with lots of love who want to snuggle; after all, they're just bones and need help staying warm...
