Giant Microbes Plushies Could Just be Disturbingly Cute!

GIANTmicrobes: Cute or Disturbing Toys?

Who in the world thought that deadly microbes that make up illnesses and viruses such as malaria or chicken pox would make good plushies? Whoever came up with Giant Microbes was a genius. They make good gifts for geeks or anyone who has a slightly odd sense of humor. They could also be potentially fun ways to teach kids about diseases.

How can you hate them, anyway? They're so cute. They're fun to throw at people, too. "Ha, I infected you with the flu!"

E. Coli Giant Microbes Plushie

GIANTmicrobes 5"-7" Plush E. Coli (Escherichia Coli) Microbe

What an adorable specimen of E. Coli! Look, he's even smiling at you.

Of course, you'll want to overlook the fact that real E. Coli would give you nasty cramps and bloody diarrhea... avoid eating undercooked ground beef!

Jewelsofawe says:

They are kind of cute

Azarel Tenka says:

Actually, they could be very educational to our children, I mean, what's the difference in letting them have a little plushie with a tag, then giving the a book. A BIG difference, how many kids do you know who want to read a good book? *eyeroll* Kids go nuts for toys, of any kind, though, no matter how weird looking.

shizzy says:

i bought one it is the cutest thing ever by the way i am only 10 and i have learnt a lot about these, but there is one i dont like that is the heart worm because it blocks arteries causing death.

Elizabeth says:

I think they are a great way to teach kids about microbes. Pictures they just ignore

kristi says:

As someone who works in the healthcare field, I think these toys are a great way to teach children about disease. Since we discovered these little guys, my 6 year old son has been asking all kinds of questions. I never thought he would want me to explain what a T4 Bacteriophage is! Why scare children with graphic pictures of diseases when the Giant Microbes are so much more pleasant to look at?

BAAAAL says:

Lol these little cuties really made my day.

Bailey says:

I already have three and they're adorable! They're very fun and I've had many people laugh at them. It's hard not to love them.

ducky_love says:

I have several of them and i love them! They're an adorable and intelligent idea. Flesh eating disease is my favorite. He has a little knife and fork ^.^

stefan says:

I WANT ONE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Now i have 31! Since Swine Flu has been released, it will be known as Flu girlfriend!

idon'thaveone): says:

"Bugs", as we affectionately called them in micro, are an inalienable part of life as we know it. As other posters have noted, without them, there would be no us.

I first met "Giant Microbes" in Pharm, our professor had a bag full of them. Although I can't saw we learned a whole lot from them, giving each other gonorrhea and the clap was a nice entertaining break in the middle of our three hour class, and I do believe that was their point, so they served us well.

sadeew says:

Cute and educational. Wish they were around when I was a little science nerd - maybe it would have been the only stuffed toy I actually played with. You could do so much with these!

liz says:

they are a wonderful way to learn about microbes! most kids wouldn't ever dream of picking up a microbiology book, but a cute little plushie with and informational tag is great! i love them! so cute!

hellokitty(: says:

i want one really badly! they are so adorable! hah (: i am not saying that the microbes (the real ones) are harmless, because believe me ebola & the others scare the bejesus out of me. however i think it is a great way to show how they look(shape) and they are just downright cute (: i am fourteen.

Ick, what a disgusting concept.

bella says:

?????????????????????????????

scarywoodwitch says:

Lol, trying to promote OCD at the earliest possible age haha?

WhitePineLane says:

Um, just "Eew".

skiesgreen says:

Good article. I never thought of this before, Well done.

Wysiwigs says:

Oh, I just don't think so...blech!

thrivingmom says:

Yuck, now I've seen everything.

Anna says:

What a waste of plush. Seriously, do people care about this? I don't find it cute at all. Why make infection education fun? Whatever happened to showing kids scary pictures from the infectious disease atlas to make sure they really GET IT? Buying for my kid would be like saying: "They're fun to throw at people, too. 'Ha, I infected you with HIV/syphilis/gonorrhea!'"

thakidinme says:

funny for adults and gags but I don't think we should desensitize our children when it comes to harmful germs and deadly bacterias. Isn't that what we did with violence- that worked out real well, huh.

ellaben says:

Perish the very thought and the toys along with them

fefe says:

I prefer cute toys like beanie babies or Hello Kitty.

SusanVillasLewis says:

That is disgusting!! How do you find this stuff? :-) They aren't cute and ... just ... ewww!

Herpes Giant Microbe

HERPES (HERPES SIMPLEX VIRUS 2) GIANT MICROBES [Toy] [Toy] [Toy] [Toy]

Amazon Price: $7.17 (as of 12/06/2009)Buy Now

Fun to toss around in the office, but I don't recommend giving this little guy as a present to your significant other. They might get the wrong idea.

Bed Bug Giant Microbes Plush

Chances are you already go to bed at night with bed bugs, so why not take this cuddly creature to bed with you? This one won't bite!

Malaria never looked this cute before!

Real malaria is quite nasty, of course. Symptoms include chills, fever, sweating, nausea, cramps, and generally feeling miserable. Quite deadly. Try to avoid getting acquainted with mosquitoes in areas where malaria is an epidemic.

Ear Ache Giant Microbes Plushie

EAR ACHE GIANT MICROBE

Amazon Price: $7.15 (as of 12/06/2009)Buy Now

I'm rather fond of Ear Ache. It looks like a cute, fuzzy peach. The vacant stare is a little unnerving, though.

Stomach Ache Giant Microbes Toy

STOMACH ACHE GIANT MICROBE PLUSH

Amazon Price: $7.00 (as of 12/06/2009)Buy Now

At first I thought this looked like a weird subway sandwich with eyeballs, but it's actually stomach ache.

Somehow I don't think real stomach ache looks much like this, but I'm sure this plushie is much cuter than the real thing.

Black Death Giant Microbes Plush

PLAGUE GIANT MICROBE PLUSH

Amazon Price: $6.25 (as of 12/06/2009)Buy Now

This is the adorably disturbing Black Death plushie. I will hug it and squeeze it and call it George.

Bubonic plague is, of course, very unpleasant. Fortunately the last major outbreak was several hundred years ago. Let's try to keep it that way.

OK, I'll admit it, this thing isn't very cute at all. A flea is a flea, and fleas are disgusting little varmints. But I'm sure someone would appreciate this little fella.

If you like Giant Microbes, you'll probably like Skelanimals too! However, SusanVillasLewis has proven that the reverse is not necessarily true. :)
