You too can become a Giant!

It's true. Squidoo is a great place to create web pages for free. But did you know that part of the magic of Squidoo also comes from the membership?

Since Squidoo started in the fall of 2006, our lensmasters have continued to create great lenses and do great things. To celebrate our most prolific users, we started the Giant Squids program.

The Giant Squids are an elite group of users who get special privileges to go with their awesome lensmastery skills. Every lensmaster is eligible, including you!

What is a Giant Squid?

A Giant Squid is a lensmaster who has created 50 really great lenses that have been hand reviewed by the Giant Squid Organizers, and thus has been accepted into the group.

Giant Squids get privileged access to tools, a distintive gold star, (Gold stars not only look good, they give lenses a little ranking boost too!) the prominent Giant Squid badge (pictured here which appears on all of their maxed Squidoo lenses) and several other unique and really special perks.

Learn more about the Giant Squid program and its many perks by visiting Giant Squids on Squidoo

Are My Lenses Good Enough?

Learn what the Giant Organizers are really looking for when they choose Giants

When you come across a Giant lens, chances are you'll know it even before you look for the Giant badge and gold star. Giant lenses are well written and unique. They are completely modified, leaving no default modules or cookie cutter co-brand (Squidwho, Squidlit, Squidvid, etc.) templates in place.

Before submitting your lenses for Giant Squid approval visit What Makes A Giant Squid Lensmaster a Superhero to see a simple checklist of what the Giant Organizers are looking for when they choose the next round of Giant Squid Lensmasters.

But don't stop there!

Once you've got the basics in place, use your imagination, creative talent, and personal charm to give your lenses the additional wow factor needed to get them noticed and recognized as Giants.

You'll find information about proper lens length, finding your style, choosing topics, and more ideas for quality lens building at How to Create a Quality Lens.

What Perks do Giant Lensmasters Get?

Giant Squid Perks

Giant Squid lensmasters receive the following perks.

1. Access to our (secret) Giant Squids blog, full of first-looks at new features and insider tips.

2. A private email address to reach Megan about Lens of the Day submissions.

3. A Giant Squid shield automatically added to all their lenses.

4. Gold stars on all of their published, featured lenses. Gold stars not only look nifty to your readers, they also give your lenses a little
added LensRank boost. Learn more about badges and stars here.

5. A shot at making the Giant Squids Top 100 List, a list of the top Giant lenses, sorted by LensRank.

6. A Custom Lens Template Tool for superfast lensmaking.

7. First crack at Squidoo's coolest new tools and features.
For example, the Giants got to hear about HeyMonkeyBrain, the new lens layouts, Squidaholic.com and the new dashboard days before the rest of Squidoo. They even helped test some of it.

8. A special Lensmaster dashboard just for Giants.

9. A chance at being featured on the Giant Squid Community Showcase.

10. When it's time for the next round of new Giants to join the ranks they can nominate the people they think really deserve it.

11. No daily lens limits - You can make as many lenses a day as you want, and you can have as many unimproved lenses under construction as you need.

12. Greenlighting is now active - The SquidDon't spam filter is a thing of the past for Giants. Your trustworthy lenses will never be hassled by the spam filter again. The greenlighting has been activated but if you're a Giant and you find your lenses are still stuck in the filter, please email giants at squidoo.com so we can greenlight you forevermore.

And there are new giant perks being added all the time!

The next application deadline for the Giants is
June 30 2009. Start getting your lenses ready today.

The Giants have earned their recognition and rewards through their dedication to Squidoo and the consistant high quality of their many lenses.

So You Want To Be A Giant Squid?

This Sounds Great! How Do I Apply?

Deadline for becoming a Giant Squid Lensmaster

Giant Squid lensmasters are chosen and inducted into the program on a quarterly basis.

The next deadline for being recognized as a Giant is on June 30, 2009 After that you'll have to wait until September 30, 2009 to be considered for Giant Squidness.

Two Ways to Become a Giant
(after you've got your 50 great lenses ready)

1. Drop us a note at giants(at)squidoo.com by June 30, 2009. Link to your lensmaster profile page so we know where to look. We might not reply, but we'll be watching! (This is the best way to be sure you don't get overlooked.)

2. Get an existing Giant to nominate you at giants (at)squidoo.com.

As the deadline approaches announcements will be made at Squidu, and on the official Squidblog.

Start getting your 50 lenses in tip top shape today to be ready for the next deadline.

I'm Ready. Do I Have to Wait?

Ready Before the Deadline?

We're ready when you are. As soon as you've reached your goal of 50 fabulous Giant quality lenses, you CAN apply.

Send us a link to your bio page at giants (at) squidoo.com and we'll take a look.

You won't get into the program any earlier but you can rest assured that your application will be accepted and looked at, and you can get back to making your fantastic lenses!

I've Got 50 Lenses but some are locked for Review

Do Lenses Locked for Review Count?

Do Locked Lenses Count?

Unfortunately, no. Locked lenses do not count towards your 50 awesome lenses since we have no way of knowing if they will ever be released or not.

The good news is that one of the perks for being a Giant Squid Lensmaster is that your lenses will no longer be put through the Squidoo Spam Filter, because we know the Giants are trustworthy but if you take advantage of that trust you will lose your Giant Squid status.

Giant Squid lenses CAN be reported and flagged just like any other lens so be sure to check the Squidoo TOS if you are unsure if your topic meets our standards.

How are my lenses Counted?

How to make sure you have enough awesome lenses before Gianthood

We will be counting the number of lenses that appear on your bio page.

Your bio page will only display lenses that are published. Any work in progress lenses that appear on your dashboard will not be visable and therefore they will not be counted towards your goal of 50 lenses.

In order to be sure you have the proper amount of lenses completed in time, please be sure to hit the publish button on the day before the deadline, or create a couple of extra ones to be safe.

Can I be a Giant with less than 50 Lenses?

Sorry but no!

After you've reached Giant status at Squidoo, you must maintain 50 awesome lenses.

If you fall below the 50 lens mark because you've sold, deleted, or transfered some of your lenses to another account (even if that other account is yours) you will be dropped from the Giant Squid Lensmaster program and lose all of your hard-earned Giant perks.

Can I Be a Giant With 2 Accounts of 25 Lenses Each?

Sorry, all of your 50 awesome lenses must be in the same account.

We can not combine accounts. To be a Giant Squid lensmaster you must have and maintain 50 awesome lenses in one account.

No exceptions!

Excellent tips and information. I am in Panic mode. I have 56 lenses and applied for Giant Squid. Do I have to wait until after June 30th to see if I made it? Where can I find some giants to look over my lenses and let me know, which ones need work?

Wonderful info. I believe I have done just about all I can to qualify for Giant status, but we will see I guess. Since I had joined Kab's Squid Squad for the Giant competition, I'm wondering if Kab will nominate me or if I should send a link to my lensmaster page to giant@squidoo.com. I'm just kind of uncertain as to the protocol in this. I do hope they deem me worthy and if not, then I guess I will just have to do better. I am currently at 65 rated lenses and plan on shooting for 100 within the next 6 months. By the way, I really appreciated the kind comments you sent me, but I hope you can take a moment to come to my Squidoo Cancer Forum and leave some words of encouragement for both "alteredkat" and "blue22d." I would appreciate that even more. Thanx a bunch!

Thanks for this RMS. I have a way to go (20 more lenses) but this is inspiration to keep on going. Now to motivate myself - finish those "under construction" (there are 3) or make a new one? I have sometimes made a new one in a few hours, but the under construction ones are clearly going to take more than a few days because of the research they require.

Awesome lens--I'm nowhere near 50 yet, but I'm working on it. I figure quality is better than quantity, so I'l get there!

Interesting lens. I heard from a friend of mine, who has one lens, not too big that she made $9 in one month. So, 100 lenses.. Or imagine being a giant..

Great advice for all lensmasters, Robin. I'm happy about the new Giant perks. My What's New Pussycat? lyrics lens was caught in Squidoo's spam filter for a few days. (I know you had a similar experience!) A Giant Squid Angel Blessing to you.

Robin -- glad to hear about your activities as a giant squid mentor -- 50 lenses is really quite attainable -- when reflecting back on that as it's been nearly one year! Good to hear about all "the fantastic perks you receive are well worth the effort." Nice to have more visibility for giant squids!
