Gibson Explorer Electric Guitar - Futuristic Guitar Design
The Gibson Explorer is one of those iconic guitar designs that everyone who loves rock 'n roll music is familiar with, even if they don't know its name. The guitar was first sold in 1958 and 1959, but it was then discontinued. The model still made a splash with many big names of classic rock like Eric Clapton and Allen Collins (from Lynyrd Skynyrd). The rare guitar became so popular that Gibson had to bring it back in 1975, and the reissue has been produced ever since.
The original Korina wood 1958 Gibson Explorer guitars are extremely rare. This guitar was also called a Gibson Futura. Some estimate that less than 50 were produced, and even less survived. That makes them very valuable -- in the tens or even hundreds of thousands of dollars. The 1959 Explorer and the reissues are valued at less, but some are still quite expensive. This is not a guitar designed for broke kids looking to start a band.
Some variations on the Explorer include the 9/10ths scale Explorer 90, the Explorer Pro, and the Explorer II/E2.
