Gibson Les Paul Studio vs Epiphone Les Paul Custom
I became familiar with the finish of the Gibson Les Paul Studio Silverburst because of Adam Jones, guitarist of Tool.
Even though there are rumors about the mystique and availability of this finish the truth is that nowadays it's widely available.
In this review I'll explain the features of this electric guitar and compare it to 2 alternatives, the Epiphone Les Paul Custom and the Ibanez ART 2EX1.

The Gibson Les Paul Studio Silverburst is a scaled down version of the Les Paul Standard guitar. Other than the lack of binding on the neck and body it's for the most part the same guitar. But in a rare case, choosing a particular finish has more than a few perks.
The body and neck are made of solid mahogany, what contributes to the thickness we associate with Les Paul guitars. The top is capped with maple and the Silverburst color is finished with organic nitro-cellulose. The body of this guitar, only in this finish, has received the 'chambered' treatment of the much higher priced Standard.
The pickups are the Gibson 490R and 498T humbuckers, these used to come in the Standard until recently. Compared to the Bursbucker Pro these pickups have a more pronounced upper midrange giving a more aggressive sound.
The 'old amp' volume knobs are push/pull allowing you to split the humbuckers and get single coil sounds. Something else unique to the Silverburst finish is the ebony fretboard.
Another perk of this finish is the profile of the neck, instead of the classic 50's neck that comes with most Les Paul Studio guitars this one comes with the 60's slim tapered which is much thinner and speed friendly.

Because of the price of the Gibson Les Paul Studio a lot of players consider the Epiphone Les Paul Custom instead. The reputation of these Epiphone guitars is not like the Gibson Les Paul Studio, but these guitars are very good in their own right.
They cost much less, and even though they are manufactured in China they are assembled in a privately owned factory owned by Gibson. The Epiphone Les Paul Custom Silverburst mimics the Gibson Les Paul Custom, adding binding on the neck, back and front of the body. But other than that it's actually closer to the Gibson Les Paul Studio.
The pickups are replicas of the same 490R and 498T humbuckers featured in the Gibson Les Paul Studio Silverburst, and the neck is modeled after the 60's slim tapered that comes with that guitar was well. The mahogany body is not chambered and the fingerboard is rosewood, strange because ebony fingerboards is one of 'THE' features of the Gibson Les Paul Custom.

Ibanez ART 2EX1 Metallic Silver Sunburst Review
Sound: 3.5/5Playability: 3.5/5
Construction Quality: 3.5/5
Finish: 3.5/5
Overall Value: 4/5
This inexpensive electric guitar has proven to be quite a machine. The Ibanez ART has something that at least me personally had never seen before, active pickups powered by AA batteries.
With heavy metal basically moving hard rock out of the way in the last 10 years, more and more new guitar players look to start out with active pickups. Apart from sounding very modern Ibanez guitars are known for feeling modern as well.
The neck is a very slim U shape and the body has beveled edges than thin out making it very comfortable to play standing up. It's hard to criticize this guitar in any aspect, especially when it has such a good price.
