Gibson Learn & Master Guitar Review
Many people have the desire to become a skilled guitarist, but only a few of them ever realize their dreams. Why is this? For many, it's because of how they were taught. Some learning methods are generally more successful than others. For instance, learning a musical instrument through books typically isn't as effective because of the lack of visual aids and lesson interaction. Private tutors are generally limited because of their musical background and areas of expertise, and because the student doesn't have a easy way of going back and reviewing the information that was just taught, like DVDs or online video learning provides.

Course Features

The 20 DVDs
Everyone out there that's tried learning guitar through poor quality online videos will be glad to hear that Learn & Master Guitar was filmed in High Definition. Personally, I think all learning videos should be shot in Hi-Def, but with the guitar it's especially important since being able to see frets and individual strings clearly is essential.
The course assumes no prior background in music and walks you through basic music theory, how to read music, tabs, how to play your first chords, strumming patterns, and picking before moving into more advanced theory, slides, tapping, genre, playing and much more. The course has so much content that you will probably work through the course over the period of 1 or more years.
If you have kids that want to learn guitar, they also have a Gibson Learn and Master Guitar Homeschool Edition, which adds supplemental course material in a teacher's guide and allows parents who may not even play guitar to help their kids realize their dreams.
The Jam-Along CDs
Another great feature of this course is the 5 jam along CDs which really succeed in making practice a lot more fun. I mean come on... playing alongside a studio-quality band in your practice time... how is that not totally cool?

The Workbook
The lesson-companion book you get contains 106 pages, and is illustrated with black/white photographs. The music and notation from each video lesson is included as well as important supplemental lesson material.
The Community Website
The online support community website for this course was just re-launched at the beginning of November, 2010. This is the THE place where students of Legacy Learning courses post specific lesson questions, give updates on their progress, and divulge guitar-playing tips and tricks. Members of the community as well as staff of Legacy Learning Systems including instructor Steve Krenz are typically quite helpful and responsive to member questions. Ongoing support of this nature is a very valuable component of the Gibson Learn & Master Guitar course.
My Conclusion
The one disadvantage that this course has is the $149 price-tag, which may be enough to scare off those that aren't terribly serious about taking up the guitar. The truth is that private guitar lessons often end up being up to 10X more expensive than this course, and aren't even as effective as a curriculum like this which you can take at your own pace and in the comfort of your own home.
Recommendation: I haven't seen any other DVD guitar course with such easy to follow, high-quality lessons paired with phenomenal production values as Learn and Master Guitar. Do yourself a favor and check them out today.
Warning!
Note that the RETAIL version of this course sold on Amazon (shown below) and other retail stores only has 10 DVDs vs the 20 DVDs that the DELUXE edition contains which you can find ONLY at Legacy Learning System's Website.
