One of the best gift ideas for a cupcake lover is a cupcake basket!
No, not a basket made entirely out of edible cupcakes, but a basket filled with lots of goodies to make and decorate cupcakes!You can put together a gorgeous looking basket using cupcake baking essentials like cake mix, a cute little kitchen timer, a few decorations like sprinkles, colored sugars etc, cupcake liners, a cute apron, cooking utensils like measuring cups, mixing bowl, whisks etc and maybe a book or two on cupcake recipes.
Wrap it all up in clear cellophane and tie it with a great big bow and watch the face of the gift recipient light up.
It's a very unique gift because you pick everything that goes in it and it's something they'll get a lot of use out of for years to come. Plus you'll likely be getting samples of all the yummy goodies they'll be making with your gift and that's always a plus.

My Rainbow Cupcake Recipe
- Serves: 20 cupcakes
Ingredients
- 1 store bought box of white cake mix (has to be white or the colors will come out muddy)
- Red orange yellow green blue and violet food coloring. I used Wilton's food coloring because it comes out outrageously bright!
- white cupcake baking cups
- cupcake pan
- 6 bowls or cups to separate and color the batter
Instructions
1. Prepare the cake mix according to package directions
2. Divide the batter equally between 6 bowls or disposable cups (It's very important that they be equal amounts or you won't have enough of every color for all the cupcakes)
3. Add each different food coloring to each cup and stir until completely tinted and no white batter remains. Add the amount of food coloring a little at a time until it reaches the desired color/brightness you want.
4. Line the cupcake pans with the cupcake liners.
5. Starting with the violet batter, add 1 tsp of batter to the bottom of each cupcake liner. it's ok if it doesn't completely cover the bottom of the cupcake liner.
5. Repeat this step for each batter color until you finish the top with the red batter.
6. Bake in a 350 F oven for 16-21 minutes depending on how hot your oven runs.
For frosting you can use a big dollop of fresh whipped cream or what I used was homemade buttercream frosting.

These are the food colors I used to color the batter of my rainbow cupcakes. The colors come in a gel formula and only a small amount is needed to produce gorgeous colors.
This set comes with 8 colors including the six I used in the rainbow cupcakes. The colors included are: Christmas Red, Lemon Yellow, Leaf Green, Sky Blue, Brown, Orange, Pink and Violet.
My easy buttercream frosting colored blue for a little boys birthday!
Easy Homemade Buttercream Frosting
- Serves: Enough to frost 24 cupcakes or one whole cake
Ingredients
- 1 cup solid white vegetable shortening
- 1 teaspoon clear vanilla extract
- 3 tablespoons of water
- 1 lb (4 cups) confectioner's sugar
- 1 tablespoon Wilton meringue powder
- A pinch of salt
Instructions
Cream shortening, vanilla, and water. Add dry ingredients and mix on medium speed until mixed thoroughly. Beat an additional minute until creamy and fluffy.
Use to frost cupcakes, cakes, etc
Can be colored with food coloring if desired.
