Gift Idea This Christmas

Christmas Gift Ideas From the Past

Every year it seems that searching for a Christmas gift idea gets more an' more elusive. When we were kids all we hadda' do was close our eyes an' wait 'til morning. Soon, the sun would peek out over the horizon... or, at our house someone would need a bathroom break waaaaay before dawn an'... Voila! We would find that Christmas was all laid-out an' ready to be discovered.

No worrying 'bout finances or whether someone actually LIKED what we got 'em for Christmas or not; we got 'em what we got 'em an' they'd jus' better darn-well be happy with it. Remember? Well, maybe not quite that extreme, but I do recall spending most of my free time wondering 'bout what would be under the tree for ME ! ! ! Seldom did a thought cross my mind to waste time an' energy on what someone else could worry 'bout for themselves.

Later, when I became a parent, I was over-zealous in my efforts at finding the perfect gift for everyone. I found myself juggling books, measuring yardage, haunting dollar stores an' generally creeping 'round corners about every other day or so to try an' keep up with the hassle. An' every year, the hassle seemed to get worse.

Traditions and Customs

In A Rut

Santa on the MoonWe used to love the idea that family traditions and customs could become lifelong memories. What we didn't realize was that when traditions and customs are not handled properly, then even the good times can begin to feel like being In A Rut.

A few years back, we began to recognize that every holiday season brought the same expectations. A relatively frenzied dash started shortly before Halloween an' quickly grew to a maddening crescendo by the time Christmas an' the New Year rolled 'round. Gone were easy-going holidays with family an' friends. No longer did we meet at the piano an' sing carols while building lasting memories. Instead, it was every person for him or herself. 'Gimme', gimme', gimme' ! ! !' That was the word for the day.

By the end of our happy an' festive Christmas celebration, wrapping paper, ribbons, packages an' tempers all seemed to be completely synchronized... for the onset of World War 3. Oh, my good hubby-buddy an' I started out with good intentions. Only, somewhere along the way our good intentions took over an' became tools for breeding greed, confusion an' frustrations for our little family.

In our desire to give, give, give we spent too much time searching for gifts, too much money buying unnecessary junk an' not nearly enough energy enjoying the real reason for the season. Our family suffered a temporary set-back until we re-evaluated the situation an' made a concerted effort to steer the tribe back on course.

Home for Christmas

Family Christmas

Family ChristmasBeing home for Christmas was no longer the dream we had imagined for our family. In fact, our family Christmas held none of the won'erful feelings of peace on Earth an' good will towards man or any other beast. Jus' before Halloween folks were a'ready looking towards Christmas as though it might be fifteen minutes before midnight on Christmas Eve. In truth, I did my own version of hurrying the holidays along. I began thinking 'bout NEXT Christmas, 'round about Boxing Day.

So every year I began making next year's plans before the Christmas sun finished settling down on the snowy horizon. That is, until my good hubby-buddy an' I decided to take stock of what was really happening with all our family traditions. That's when we decided to make some new traditions. Change things up a bit.

Winter Wonderland

A Snowman in the House

ChristmasLook around an' see how Mother Nature decorates her Winter Wonderland. She has no pro'lems with using whatever is available to decorate, including putting a snowman in the house. 'Course, Mother Nature has a much more spacious home than most of us do, but the principal is the same.

Have you noticed how things are changing all over? How people are getting creative in taking back The Good Old Days? Well, that's what we did, too. We devised some plans to make lasting memories, looking to Mother Nature an' others for inspiration. When I asked my good hubby-buddy if he would wrap one 'uh my gifts nicely, he took wrapping to a whole new level. He built a snowman in the house.

Gift Wrapping Attempts

Last Minute Shopping

Gift Box With Christmas BaubleLemme' tell you 'bout the curious gift wrapping attempts made by my good hubby-buddy, over the years. The best description I can offer involves last minute shopping, paper or plastic grocery bags an' big, fancy ribbons an' bows. Not being a fan of shopping or wrapping gifts, my good hubby-buddy often procrastinated until Christmas Eve before attempting either.

Once his gift for me was purchased, his aversion to wrapping took over. Naturally, with the grocery bags all handy an' everything, he would cram the gift into the sack, wad the top of the bag shut an' plant a big Christmas Bow on the outside of the bag.

Christmas Morning

Snowman Puddles

ChristmasOn Christmas morning my good hubby-buddy led me to my office where he had built a full size snowman. No, no... there were no nasty leftover residues where Mr. Snowman had rested his rear-end. Nope! No snowman puddles at all. However, hidden within each section of his body my Christmas visitor held a gift.

My good hubby-buddy had very cleverly wrapped (wadded) white paper 'round a gift for me. The bottom held a lovely large prize that I had been wanting for awhile. Inside Mr. Snowman's chest was another, somewhat smaller gift. An' his head was made up of a still smaller gift. With coal for eyes, a carrot nose an' coal for his mouth, the snowman was almost complete.

Oh, wait! He also had arms of twigs an' in one hand was a very nicely wrapped present about the size of a box of candy. It doesn't matter what gifts you are giving, you can still create the same effect by wrapping each section as one part of the snowman. Add a top hat, scarf an' a corn-cob pipe an' the recipient of your gift will be thrilled by the unique results. Trust me... you have my word on it.

We came up with other ideas for making the holidays more memorable an' I'll be sharing those, too. For now, I hope this will inspire your creative thinking so you can make a memory in your family.

Until the next time, keep a hug on.

Snowman

Above is a pretty good example of what my snowman looked like when my good hubby-buddy gave it to me on Christmas morning. The hat was more of a top hat, but otherwise, this snowman looks a lot like my snowman did. You see where each ball is a section of his body? In each ball is where my good hubby-buddy buried a different gift.

Each year, I was given at least a couple 'uh gifts that were wrapped in grocery store bags, so the year of the snowman was really a great s'rprise. I loved it. I must say, I did hate destroying the snowman to get to the gifts, but I pro'lly woulda' been tempted to try an' save him for a few years, if I hadn't hadda' destroy him. He was soooooo cuuuuute.

Give a Snowman This Christmas

Make your own snowman

Gift BoxesChristmas Gifts

You can give a snowman this Christmas, too. Make your own snowman by wrapping three sections in white tissue paper. Use the sections to build a snowman. Add eyes, nose, a mouth an' twigs for arms. Oh, yeah; an' don't forget to add a scarf. Your snowman can be any size; large or small. You can even wrap it as a gift. Won't someone be s'prised when they open the box to discover the fun?

The Best Tradition

Christmas Traditions, Old and New

Time for a question

Christmas Night

I still enjoy Christmas Traditions, but I also like to try new things. I figure that if no one ever tried anything new, we would never have had the gift of electricity, running water or many other conveniences that make life so much easier an' fun. So jus' like using this image of the Christmas tree, I am inspired to try new things, from time to time. You never know until you try it, if you will like something new.

Sounds like a fun and inventive way to wrap gifts! Some people take gift wrapping to an art form, but quirky ideas like the snowman are perfect for those looking for something different.
  • YayasHome Nov 9, 2011 @ 6:12 am | delete
That's true; some people really seem to have a talent for making gifts look so inviting that it's a shame to unwrap 'em. I've always kinda' wished I were talented in that way. But the down side of that would be that I would pro'lly never let my kids have their actual gifts. I'd be inclined to build some kinda' shrine to the beauty of all those cleverly wrapped presents an' the kids would hafta' play with rocks for Christmas, instead.

I love the gift bearing snowman idea! How very creative! As a mother, I too have found the work overwhelming and endless to make Christmas special and perfect. I spent hours, possibly days wrapping gifts just so and placing them carefully under the tree. On Christmas, all of the carefully cut, folded, pressed gift wrap laid in shreds or crumpled balls on the floor. I have come to appreciate why my grandmother used to hang envelopes with money on the Christmas tree :)

Your gramma' was pretty slick, actually. Seeing all the gift wrap cast aside like so much fodder often makes me think it would be better to forgo the painstaking hours of making everything jus' so. Then, I remember how much fun everyone had creating the mess that is left behind. Still, I'm seriously considering your gramma's alternative. LOL

Loved the snowman idea as a Christmas wrapping! I also enjoy making special wraps for my Christmas presents. I cut out figurines and shapes, then stand them on top of the gift. A personalized tag for each gift. It is fun to try different things each Christmas, even when we also follow old family traditions.

That's a really good idea. i think I'll try that this year. That added touch would be jus' perfect to show off a special gift. Thanks for the tip.

Thank you, Vikk. I was really s'prised to see a snowman in the middle of my office on Christmas morning, but I was also thrilled that my good hubby-buddy was so clever.
