The Gift of Patience

Ranked #5,118 in Parenting & Kids, #171,982 overall

To Everything a Season

You can't hurry nature. Seasons come. Seasons go. And in between, we learn to wait. Helen Keller learned patience in order to blossom as a person with many challenges.

So do tiny buds of Spring. After a long Winter's wait, sunshine warms and nudges them to open.

Patience is one way to bless others as well as ourselves. It's a lifelong gift we can pass on to our children and grandchildren. And I wonder...What if the world took a whole day off from impatient toe-tapping and hand-wringing Imagine how those 24 hours of patience could transform something as simple as a ten-minute wait in line.

We could never learn to be brave and patient, if there were only joy in the world.
Helen Keller (1880 - 1968)

Speak Your Mind

Does patience come naturally, or is it a learned behavior?

Learned! Just watch a two-year-old struggling with a stubborn will.

RenaissanceWoman2010 says:

I believe patience is modeled and learned best at an early age. However, we can learn to be more patient throughout life. Some people seem to be born with a natural inclination towards patience.

Joan4 says:

Children learn what they live. Patience is definitely a learned behavior in my opinion.

OhMe says:

Oh definitely a Learned Behavior and at an early age. Mostly it is learned by infants and toddlers from their parents - Wait a minute! How many times have I said that one!

sittonbull says:

I say it's primarily learned, but there is an apparent genetic predisposition for patience as well as other attributes_ good and bad. I'm far more patient and far less bulletproof now that I was as a young man who thought I knew everything there was to know!

aj2008 says:

Children learn how to be patient (or not) from their parents. How many times have you gone to the shops with your children and although they have not saved up enough pocket money for that "must have toy", you allow them to steer you to the toy shop "just to have a look"?

They show you the toy, but oh dear, they are still a few $$s or £ss short. Do you give them the next two weeks' pocket money in advance or do you help them understand that if they do not have enough money NOW, then they will have to wait.

Our strategies as parents are what will save the planet from or condemn it to the "must have it NOW" culture that has contributed to the economic crisis.

I know some parents think I am too strict with my children - but mine are the ones who rarely throw complete complete tantrums because they cannot get their own way!

You're either patient or you're not. It's your genetic makeup.

Patience Slows Us Down

Even the birds know how to wait...

Several red-capped birds (I think they're house finches) flew into my backyard, ready to dive into the newly filled feeders. Problem was, a pair of scrub jays had squawked into their midst, disrupting everyone's plan.

Did the finches take off for greener pastures? Nope.
They sat there, determined to have their fill. In fact, as the early birds refused to budge, other finches showed up and did the same. A few of them courageously dove towards the jays, annoying them until they gave up their bullying ways and left.

Patience pays off.

The Three P's

Patience, Persistence, & Perseverance

In time, patience becomes a habit, and we're able to show persistence in the most difficult situations. Persistence leads to perseverance--an admirable trait that helps strengthen us to stand tall in the face of adversity.

Tired of struggling to make a living? Be patient. Keep the faith. God knows your every need--even the needs you might not recognize yet.

Feeling discouraged that in spite of hard work, you find yourself back at Square One? Don't you dare give up! Persistence will pay off eventually.

It's a tough world out there, with the cost of living rising and unemployment climbing every day. Hopelessness might sound like a good place to pitch your tent, but please don't! I speak from experience. Ten years ago, my husband and I went through a two-year period of unemployment after his company closed. Trust me when I say that hopelessness is not an option. Hopelessness will only drag you down, and the view is not very pretty down there. Instead, why not try the following:

1. Look beyond your own troubles. Reach out to someone in need. You're never so poor that you can't give something to cheer another downtrodden soul.

2. Find ways to laugh. Laughter truly is medicine for the soul.

3. Be aware of others who are struggling, and show them a simple kindness. Help at a shelter, volunteer at a food distribution center. Take a walk with a friend.

4. Visit a shut-in. The elderly often get overlooked when a crisis hits the general population.

Patience in the Morning

A mug to start your day...

Have courage for the great sorrows of life and patience for the small ones; and when you have laboriously accomplished your daily task, go to sleep in peace. God is awake. - Victor Hugo (1802 - 1885)

I'm very thankful that my upbringing nurtured patience in me. I believe my faith and spirituality have a great deal to do with it. Of course, I am human and need to constantly work on this virtue and all others. Thanks for this reminder. :-)

Ah patience is something I am currently teaching my younger children - like how it is OK to sit for 5 minutes and wait for something, without having to get out an electronic game!

This lens is also featured at Children and Parenting HQ.

And this lens has been re-blessed too!

Patience must be practiced -- over and over and over and over. We need to be patient with ourselves as we learn patience! right?

I thought the older we got, the more patient we got but I am not finding that to be true. I have to work on it all the time and think it is more of a struggle now than when I was younger. Great lens and I appreciate the reminder.

Although I promise myself each time I read something of yours that I will set aside some time and just read all you have published like a book..., but that time hasn't yet arrived. I was on squidU and clicked on a new thread there where lensmasters promote other lensmaster's lens that they like and AJ had this listed there. They reveal the lens link only and not the author, but I had a hunch this was yours prior to arriving. As usual you nailed it!
