Set Up A Gift Registry On Squidoo

A Squidoo Lens Idea

I don't really know why I thought of this -- just had Squidoo on the brain, I guess -- but the idea of using Squidoo lenses as gift registries popped into my head as I was sunning myself on the porch, eating watermelon. (No connection.)

Not that I need to make a gift registry for myself. There isn't a notable event coming up any time soon for which people might want to buy me goodies.

Still, I wanted to share the idea with my fellow lensmasters and also offer my Squidoo lensmaking experience to anyone who might need a gift registry set up for them. (More on that later.)

So here's what I'm thinking....

Gift Registries Can Be Used For....

  • Weddings
  • Baby Showers
  • Birthdays
  • Anniversaries
  • Graduations
  • House-warming parties
  • A "Dear Santa" Christmas wish-list
  • Other special occasions or significant events as you see fit
  • And for charities, such as those that give gifts to children whose families can't afford them

A Gift Registry Doesn't Have To Be For Yourself

gift registry
Make one for a friend or family member. Find out what that person needs or wants and make a gift registry lens for them.

Why Set Up A Gift Registry?

Take the guesswork out of gift-giving

I admit, I used to think gift registries were tacky. I mean, making a list of what I wanted people to buy for me seemed ... I don't know, kind of self-centered, I guess. But that's before I had ever used one, either for myself or a friend or family member. Once I did, I changed my mind.

The first time I used a gift registry was for a friend's wedding. And I was so relieved. Not only did I not have to agonize about what she and her new husband might want or need, but I didn't have to fret about duplicating someone else's gift, either. My friend also had a wide range of gift choices -- particularly, a wide range of prices -- so I was able to choose something that I knew the couple would be happy to receive and that I could afford.

Sometimes, people pool money to purchase a single gift on a registry, so they can buy something that one of them alone may not be able to afford. And sometimes it's an item that's very useful and really needed by the recipient -- something they may not otherwise be able to afford themselves. That may be a baby carriage or car seat for a first child, place settings and silverware for a newly married couple, a piece of furniture for someone's first home, and so forth.

Basically, gift registries take the guesswork out of gift-buying and ensure that the gift will be wanted. No more phony smiles and Oooh .... uh ... thanks! when recipients open their presents.

Of course, people always have the option of buying a gift that's not on the registry, giving some money instead, or not giving a gift at all. And that's fine. But a registry can at least give people some idea of what the bride and groom, new mom, college graduate, etc. like and need.

Squidoo Lenses Make Great Gift Registries

There are sales modules you can use to make gift-buying easy, like Amazon and Ebay for instance. Or use your own images and affiliate accounts to link to other websites where the items can be purchased.

The Amazon Module, For Example

If I were setting up my own gift registry....

...for, say, my big party after finishing another 2,000-mile hike (I can daydream, can't I?), I'd want goodies like these to replace what I'd worn out. See my suggestions in the descriptions below:

Here's An Idea....

After the event, photos and videos can be added to the registry. Those images may even include the gifts being put to use, with thank you notes attached.

Then create a new lens about the event and link that lens and the registry. Others can use your gift ideas to make a registry of their own or purchase an item through your lens as a gift for a similar occasion.

You Can Use This Amazon Spotlight Module For Gift Registries Too

It makes an item really stand out

This might be nice if it's something you (or he or she or they) reeeeeeeeally want.

Sierra Designs Sirius 2 Person Three-Season Tent

Amazon Price: (as of 05/31/2012)Buy Now

Sale price: $139.97

So make the description compelling. If it's pricey, maybe even suggest a gift pool. I mean, maybe the recipient would be thrilled just to get this ONE thing from 10 people instead of 10 small things from 10 people. Just a thought.

You might also choose to use only Spotlight modules, especially if you want to write more about each item and have larger images.

How Will People Know If Something Has Already Been Purchased As A Gift?

One idea is to use another module and move those items there. That module might be titled, "Gifts Already Purchased." That way, they're still on the lens but no one duplicates a gift.

That way too, someone might see what's been purchased and want to buy something complimentary, such as glassware to go with a china set, for example.

Another idea is to simply add "PURCHASED" -- large enough to be noticed -- at the beginning of the item description.

You Can Use Your Own Affilate Links in a Gift Registry

This can give you more options

Is the product not on Amazon or another Squidoo affiliate site? Well, if you are an affiliate of another online store that does carry the item, go ahead and use the link.

Here's an example of the same product in the Amazon Spotlight module above--yes, that tent again--using my own affiliate link:

Sierra Designs Sirius 2 Two-Person Three-Season Tent

And don't forget to make the images clickable too, like this one is.

Of course, this can be done with any affiliate program you might belong to.

Or Use The Link List Module for Your Gift Registry

This can give you more options....

...because not everything someone wants or needs will be available from Amazon, Ebay or other Squidoo affiliates OR from affiliate sites you belong to. With this module, though, you can link to the products anywhere on the web.

You can also insert a photo with "img src=" html code into this module, like I've done here. (It's clickable too. Right to one of my own pages. Oh shame!)

Just to illustrate--unless you really want to buy me a present--I've listed some links to goodies I sure wouldn't mind having. (Did I mention I love to hike and camp?)

The North Face Nuptse Down Jacket
Just like with the Amazon module, you can add a description here, including any specifics about the item that people might need to know to complete the purchase (size, color) or why it's on the list.

Osprey Packs Talon 44 Backpack
Actually, this product is available from Amazon. So you can always check there first. I've been amazed at some of the products I can get there ... and often for better prices than on other sites.

Microspikes: Lightweight, flexible traction for winter hiking

Testing, testing. Yep, you can use coding here too, to make your text bigger, bolder and spiffier, if you so desire.

You Can Even Put A Vacation On The Gift Registry

Using this Orbitz module

Just give a description here of where you (or he or she or they) want to go and when. Be as detailed as possible, because this could be a big purchase. Gift-givers can buy trip protection too, in case changes or cancellations have to be made.

Just a thought.

(Psst! Steve and I have never been hiking in Hawaii. April would be a good time for us to go. Oh ... and I do prefer an aisle seat.)

NOTE: Lensmasters do not earn a commission from this module.

Something To Think About

Thank you, Cappuccino136, for pointing out a flaw: How would we know if a product was purchased for the one the registry is FOR? A random someone could buy something.

Her suggestion: "There should be an understanding that friends & family would leave a comment to say what they bought. The Guestbook should be set for anyone to comment."

Or contact the lensmaster directly.

Good catch!

By all means....

If you aren't a Squidoo lensmaster but would like a Squidoo gift registry made for you or someone else, you can use the "Contact Me" link on my profile page and get in touch with me. I can create one for you at no charge.

Why no charge? Well, because I can earn money in two ways by doing so:

1. Traffic to the lens and click-outs to products and other websites increases the lens's ranking, and I can make a piece of the Squidoo pooled revenue pie that way, and...
2. I get a commission from any sale made through a Squidoo affiliate or my own affiliate links.

I can email you back with details if you contact me.
