Well, rats ... I wanted to bless this lens during my week as a rocket mom angel, but apparently since I blessed it once before, I can't re-bless. So I guess I'll just tweet it. This is still one of my favorites.

Interesting lens, and mostly spot on. I feel like it was a bit biased though and I feel like you could have presented a case for a company like Amway, or Pre-paid legal which are Multi-Level Marketing companies (now referred to as Network marketing) which have been around for nearly 40 years and are perfectly legal. I know you mentioned that not all MLM's are illegal but I also noticed there weren't any listed that you approve of.

I agree that many people do not make a significant income in Network Marketing but I do not agree that it is because they are "scams." I believe that these individuals simply don't have the necessary "know how" or marketing experience/tools to be effective in the industry. Take for example a carpenter. Not everyone has the technical ability or know how to be successful at this profession and many people may not be able to afford the tools required to effectively manipulate wood. Network marketing is no different. It is a marketing business, not a get rich quick program.
  • CleanerLife Sep 27, 2010 @ 9:31 am | delete
MLMs leave a bad taste in my mouth. While not outright scams like Cash Gifting, I do believe that all of them make most of their money from the people who sign up to be part of their marketing network.

I won't slam any of them by name, that isn't what this article was about. I just added what I hope is enough information for anyone who is considering joining an MLM to check it out thoroughly to make sure is is set up within the legal limits of the law.

Great lens. thanks For Sharing The Info

Great lens. I had always known pyramid schemes were illegal, but I hadn't considered why. Your explanations and quotes were helpful to me although I wouldn't have participated in such a scheme, so I'm sure they are saving people from losing their money or ending up in jail.

Wow this is one of the best lens, thank you so much. Now I know for sure.
  • alexkazam Apr 23, 2010 @ 6:09 pm | delete
Wow! You certainly have done your research! Fortunately my natural skepticism and understanding of maths meant that when people have tried to recruit me into a Ponzi scheme or MLM- I have said NO. Some MLM people act like they're in some kind of cult- and they probably are!

I've said it before, but from this account too: this is an essential lens.

My personal opinion is I believe in selling a product of service with value for what you get. It's important to have the belief in what you are doing. I don't like the marketing ploy of seeing a video of a person opening up a Fed Ex envelope with all cash in it. Anyway, could put cash in an envelope. Some people are probably making money in it. The 88% failure rate is typical to most online businesses though. Most because people expect money to come in with little to no work.

This has to be one of the best and most honest lenses in this category. SquidAngel Blessings for you.
  • CleanerLife Oct 30, 2009 @ 10:53 am | in reply to Michael | delete
Oh, certainly the lotteries and casinos work the same way as these scams, but the big difference, besides being state run or state sanctioned, is that they tell you up front that you are going to lose your investment.

The pyramid and cash gifting scams always tell you that you'll make money if you join, but in reality you have about as much chance of getting your money back as you would if you played the lottery. Especially if you get in on one that's already been running for a while, and if you do get in near the top, you need to be dishonest and misrepresent the whole thing to those you need to recruit in order to get your payout, thus the possible fraud charges if you do get caught!

(Can you tell that this whole issue is still a very sore spot for me, even after all this time?!)
  • Michael Oct 29, 2009 @ 6:25 pm | delete
Wow..what about people who spend $20 for some lottery tickets with the hopes of winning the big jackpot? Do they usually get back what they spent or more?

What about the millions of folks gambling at the casinos? Didn't these same Attorney Generals and big wigs warn them they would lose their hide and their homes if they continue to gamble?

Seems like double standards and corrupt officials who want to control a certain group of people who are doing pretty much the same thing as others but yet that group is doing "illegal" acts versus the others.

All I can say is wow. People wake up and smell the stink!
  • Mickie_G Aug 10, 2009 @ 10:59 am | delete
My father falls victim to these scams all the time. He is always looking for a way to make a quick buck without the work!

    Thanks for the information, Dan.
  • Joan4 Aug 4, 2009 @ 9:18 pm | delete
Blessing this one! Super message we all need to read and share!
  • Jun 23, 2009 @ 11:26 pm | delete
You've explained this topic really well so that people can see how someone has to lose in the end. In these tough economic times this message needs to get out. Great lens.
  • seedplanter May 25, 2009 @ 11:55 am | delete
You're right on target with this lens, Dan. It always amazes me how many people fall for the schemes, too. Sad that people knowingly scam others, but that's the world we live in. Gotta stay alert and make wise choices. Also keep an eye out for elderly friends who may be pulled into the scams.
  • CherylK May 18, 2009 @ 12:03 am | delete
I sure learned a lot from this lens. I didn't realize how rampant the problem is. It's amazing that so many people can be lured into this kind of thing.
  • chefkeem May 12, 2009 @ 11:25 am | delete
Just renewed my blessing - great job, Dan! :-)
  • glebber May 6, 2009 @ 12:43 pm | delete
I can't believe how cruel some people are on playing with other peoples' hopes and dreams... while just raking in the cash screwing over everyone else below them.

gah! so annoyed. we have to work on catching ALL of these scams as SOON as they form! who's with me??
  • Tipi May 4, 2009 @ 9:07 pm | delete
Another excellent lens! - You do a wonderful job on your lenses and they are informative!
  • LindaJM May 3, 2009 @ 11:40 pm | delete
Thanks for exposing these scams... you did a masterful job of getting the information out there and as an Angel assigned to monitor the Work-at-Home category, I'm thrilled to see this lens in the #7 position today! 5* and Angel blessing. I feel your lens will save a lot of people some unnecessary heartache.

Thanks for pointing that out! The problem was only showing while using Internet Explorer, and I should have tested that myself a long time ago!

It's all set now, it was just a simple fix on my side.
  • Lila-Scholer May 3, 2009 @ 2:21 pm | delete
Some of the copied text cannot be read as it goes over the right margin. I am surprised so many people are still considering pryamid schemes. But I guess with a bad economy people will try anything. Very informative.
  • Janusz May 3, 2009 @ 12:06 pm | delete
This is one Lens that needs to be seen!! So many Scams going around & this Pyramid rubbish is still bieng practised by Greedy Villains trying to make a quick Buck!.. The really sad thing is that they turn innocent law abiding people into Criminals aswell. Blessed by a Squid Angel :)
  • badmsm May 3, 2009 @ 12:08 am | delete
Excellent information, thanks for sharing it. 5 Stars & a Squid Angel Blessing!
  • spirituality May 1, 2009 @ 11:52 am | delete
thank you - I've been thinking of making a lens on this subject. Instead I'll be referring to this one then :) Great lens - you've been blessed by a squidoo angel :)
  • lakeerieartists Apr 26, 2009 @ 7:11 pm | delete
    Squid Angel blessings to you!
  • MobyD Apr 14, 2009 @ 2:49 pm | delete
I'll add my angel blessing to the others for a lens that clearly points out why cash gifting and its relatives are scams. It's one thing for a layman to say something is a scam and quite another thing to show that law enforcement agrees that it is a scam. The latter takes it out of the realm of opinion and into the realm of verifiable fact. You provide facts.
  • aj2008 Apr 10, 2009 @ 8:22 am | in reply to CCGAL | delete
It's OK - I am an Angel so I will bless this lens on behalf of both of us! Way to go Dan!!
  • CCGAL Apr 9, 2009 @ 11:22 pm | delete
This is the first time I've ever really wished I was a squid angel so I could give somebody angel blessings. Since I can't do that, I'll do the next best thing - 5*, a Fav, and some lensrolling. This is a great topic that you covered exceptionally well. Mega Kudos to you!
  • JenniferAkers Apr 2, 2009 @ 3:44 am | delete
Impressive lens! People need to know how to spot these scams, and your lens provides a great service. The information is even more important in our troubling economy, where making money is at the forefront and people's defenses may be lowered.
  • RickyRobi Mar 29, 2009 @ 10:16 am | delete
Great job! This is a topic that can not be spoken about enough. It's hard to believe people still fall for these things just because they go by a different name. A person always has to be careful and research any new "deal". Especially a "sure thing".
  • bbraneff Mar 19, 2009 @ 11:07 pm | delete
wow! such a wealth of knowledge all here in one location. Everyone and I mean Everyone needs to read this before participating in any online program. So many people get scammed everyday and I'm sure each of us has got them raw end of deal before. Good job CL! Keep up the good work!
  • Squidster Mar 18, 2009 @ 9:22 pm | delete
Well done. Added my SquidAngel Blessing to the mix in hopes that it reaches more potential victims of this type of scams. Especially when economic times get tough many are desperate enough to fall for this. Keep up the good work! ^:)^
  • Mar 18, 2009 @ 1:08 am | delete
great lens, it sounded like a good idea until i looked further into things and found out that they were all scams, definitely important to make people aware of this stuff, two thumbs up
  • GypsyOwl Mar 14, 2009 @ 10:24 pm | delete
Exceptional! Thank you for doing all this research and letting people know what this is all about. 5* FAV!
  • julcal Mar 14, 2009 @ 9:30 pm | delete
Great information. My husband and I were just talking about this kind of scandal this morning. five stars!
  • Snozzle Jan 19, 2009 @ 11:55 am | delete
Pyramid and similar programs will always flourish because of greed. People forget the concept that 'if anything sounds too good to be true it usually is.'

It's an interesting subject and Mr. Ponzi has a lot to answer for.

    Mike.
