Buddha's Birthday -- Buddhist annual celebration

Ranked #5,507 in Culture & Society, #116,591 overall

When is Buddha's Birthday celebrated?

Buddha's birthday is celebrated in many South and South East countries of Asia. It is known by different names: in India and Nepal it is known as Buddha Purnima, while Sri Lankans and Malaysians call it Vesak. In Mandarin Buddha's birthday is called Fodan and in Tibetan it is Saga Dawa.

Buddha's birthday is celebrated across Asia, and by followers of Buddha worldwide on the eighth day of the fourth month according to the Chinese Lunar Calendar. Japan is exception to this as it chose to fix the date according to the Gregorian calendar after the Meiji restoration. The holiday is celebrated in Japan either the 8th day of April or March according to the local temple.

The date of Buddhas birthday for 2012 on the lunar calendar was April 28th. It will be celebrated on May 17th in 2013.

Whether you are a Buddhist or an admirer of the great philosopher, you'll find these presents interesting and fun.

The Thangka art form is native to Tibet, and is practiced by Tibetan artists spread all over the world. These Tibetan religious paintings offer a beautiful manifestation of the divine, and they are visually and mentally stimulating. Thangka paintings last a long time provided good care is taken. The primary requirement is to keep them in a dry place.

A Little About Me

I first became interested in Buddhism when I served as a US Peace Corps volunteer in Thailand and spent a good deal of time at temples or wats as they are known there, chatting with monks and learning about their religion. I've since spent a good deal of time throughout Asia in Thailand, Laos, Burma, Cambodia, Taiwan and China.

Buddhist amulets like these are worn by the faithful in Thailand and other countries and are said to protect the wearer. Many Thai men wear a single powerful amulet around their neck or sometimes numerous amulets on a heavy chain. The value of amulet varies according to it's putative power, it's age, where it was made - most amulets are created by monks at specific temples and whether it was blessed by a revered monk. Women often wear a smaller amulet or Buddhist icon on a necklace.
