GOT WORMS?

Composting Worm Bin

Composting Worm Bin from Compostmania

Of course I mean composting worms! Gardeners love red wigglers because the worms eat organic matter like shredded paper, food scraps, manure and leaves and leave behind worm castings which are very high in plant food.

This worm tower is made up of three trays, you start with your worms and bedding in one tray and feed them your food scraps. As the worms multiply and the tray fills with castings you put another tray on top and put their food in it. The worms will migrate upwards as they feed. When all the food and bedding in the bottom tray has been turned into worm castings (or vermi-compost) you put it around your plants to fertilize them.

Since worms like to be damp but not too wet, any excess liquid, rich in nutrients from the castings, collects in the bottom part of the tower where you can use the spigot to empty it. You can then pour it around your plants as a liquid fertilizer.

You can even give your gardening friend a pound of worms (or five!) to use with the worm tower or even outdoors in a regular compost pile. A true gardener will really appreciate your thoughtfulness!

A Deluxe Gardening Gift

Grow Camp Advanced Gardening System

This Advanced Grow Camp Gardening System combines a raised bed with a greenhouse on top. The greenhouse frame is covered with a transparent cover to maximize solar heat in cool weather, helping seeds and transplants get off to an extra early start in spring, or to keep plants going for an extended harvest in fall. During warm weather there is a mesh net covering to allow full ventilation but keep out bugs and birds. You can get optional trays that will allow you to place potted seedlings in the upper part of the greenhouse frame.

An Electric Garden Shredder/Chipper

Many gardeners could use an electric garden shredder/chipper to reduce bulky green waste and tree prunings into small chips wonderful for mulching or adding to the compost bin. Shredding woody material helps it break down faster and take up less space. You can visit Electric Garden Shredders for more information and my personal review of the McCulluch Electric Garden Shredder.
