The Dreaded Retiree Gifts?

I t still happens you know. Old duffers hit the retirement date, a committee is formed of office colleagues and the poor wretch absent that day is elected to head of the Gift Committee. There are choices to make and there are ponderings to ponder before we commit the full $12.56 collected from the 200 office mates to purchase a memento of respect and appreciation for the 35 years of plodding effort. OK joke only.

With the explosion of generosity, our choices will depend on the things the retiree likes to do and plans for post retirement. May be it's best to choose gifts that will make them remember their years in the job or maybe a bottle of Stoli to help them forget! Perhaps, a bit of cash as a contribution to the legendary trip being planned. For most, they really don't want a little figurine to add to the dust gatherers. The gold plated Bulova was a classic but may be a bit trite now.

When my husband retired, he was given sweatshirts, hoodies, or t-shirts from every college in Canada and until now, we still remember fondly that day of the " Movin' on" party when we wear one. It was a great idea. Give it a little thought as for most of us this will be our last time to express to a colleague or friend our appreciation of their being with us at work. And remember the gift is also a team spirit builder for the ones staying on. If it is a crummy, inappropriate gift, it's a real downer. So here are some suggestions:

For those who are avid collectors

Get them something special to add to their collection

W e have a colleague who collected older blue vases so getting one of those was really good. The classic suitcase can work but put something funny in it.

See if the company is giving a gift or wants to match employee contributions. Some ideas are expensive so it is better to pool your money to buy one special item that would be hard for that person to get once the slippers are the main footwear.
