I really, really liked the T-shirt/hoodie idea - what an amazing gift - also liked the portraits both ideas are very different, and would be unexpected for anyone.

Lots of great ideas to think on here.

Like mentioned here, it is important to know what the retiree likes. You wish for the gift to be special, an expression of gratitude over the work they have done.

I will certainly put a lot of thought before giving a gift to retiree. Many a times, talking to them really helps, one can then come out with a gift that they can really use. My retirement plan will be to relax and meditate (it is tough), the mind keeps wandering away. So maybe I will travel a bit to let my mind meander with me.

Wow. If you can't find a retiree gift idea here you must be a republican.

You mention about getting something for the collector's collection - I agree. I love when someone pays attention to my miniatures collection and brings something that fits in.
  • aesta1 Apr 29, 2012 @ 2:49 am | delete
I know how much people love thier collection that I try to bring them something to add to this.

I still haven't retired from self-employment, and probably never will. You have provided a number of gift suggestions for those who do have friends and colleagues retiring.

Thanks for the ideas, I find retiree gifts the toughest to find.
  • aesta1 Jan 1, 2012 @ 5:25 am | delete
I just get fun things as they don't need much.

We've been conditioned to think that we'll have time to sit back an' relax, once we retire. Imagine our shock when we were immediately inundated with projects at every turn. It seems that many people are afraid we will sit around an' get bored, now that we've retired. LOL

I should be so lucky! haha
  • aesta1 Jan 1, 2012 @ 5:26 am | delete
You are right. many retired people find themselves even busier.
  • Ladymermaid Sep 10, 2011 @ 8:23 am | delete

Speaking of T-shirts...see intro...when my brother in law retired, the guys actually had T-shirts made with a caricature of Al on it that included the sign on his desk, "Failure to plan on your part does not constitute an emergency on my part" All the guys were wearing it, along with big smiles when Al got to work.

Well... even the same old gift given to everyone is OK when you've spent your whole life in the company. It might be the tradition you wouldn't want to be excluded from... too bad it happens rarely today!
  • tssfacts Jun 7, 2011 @ 9:04 am | delete
To be honest I didn't think retirement gifts were that important in today setting. When retirement gifts are given I think each individual should be taken into account not just the same old gift being given to everyone.
  • Ladymermaid Apr 4, 2011 @ 9:17 am | delete
    Very uniquely done. Best wishes.
