Gift Ideas for a Deaf and Hard of Hearing Adults, Children, Family Members and Friends
I have a brother who is deaf and multiply-disabled due to an illness when he was a baby. Though he enjoys having things that everyone else has, and can in many cases, there are times when it is helpful to find things that are unique to his needs.
I also have family members who I love very much that are aging and their hearing is not at all what it used to be. I hope to not only get some ideas myself by doing this page, but share some ideas that may help you if you want to give a gift to, or give something that will help a friend or family member who is deaf or hard of hearing.

My father was very hard of hearing his whole adult life. Hearing aids and many gifts to help the hard of hearing just didn't work for him. He took up learning American Sign Language at age 75. I am so proud of his determination. Many of us in his family learned to sign, too. He's gone now, but the gift of ASL continues in the next generations of his family.

My mother is hard of hearing which she says it's due to old age. But I think she just has "selective hearing". She does own a hearing aid. I have only seen her wear it once. We often joke about how she can sometimes hear something across the room, yet at other times can't hear when someone is in front of her. Her response is that the hearing aid wasn't turned up loud enough.

- Great lens! You included some very good information and links. I love it! I took ASL in college and loved it. I have even taught my son a lot of it. He has epilepsy and had a bit of a speech delay in the beginning and would sign things to me that he wanted. I love ASL.
I created a lens dedicated to parents of children with special needs and have added you to my list of favorite featured lenses on the hearing impaired. I am trying to create a virtual support circle for these parents or just for others who want to be informed about the condition. Thank you so much for sharing!

- I'm a volunteer ASL interpreter at my local congregation. What a gift ASL has proved to be! My entire world opened up to include hundreds more friends, a truly living language, an inspiring feeling of being needed, and incredible happiness.
