The main element of gift-buying for a wife is to concentrate on what she would like, rather than what you would like. That generally rules out electrical appliances (unless she loves gadgets) and anything of a practical nature (unless she has specifically requested something). And even if she has requested a useful gift, it is always advisable to spend a little bit more and include a luxury present as well. Make an effort with the gift-wrapping too. She will love you for it!

- Plan Ahead. If you are buying for Christmas then start to consider gift ideas now.
- Think about what she would like. Does she have a certain hobby or a collection that you could add to? Keep listening and write down anything that might give you some ideas.

- Great lens. There are plenty guys out there among us who are sadly tone deaf to the not even all that subtle art of picking something out that someone else will like. And to those guys out there my advice is that you are probably over thinking things.

- I've written a couple of articles on what to buy for your wife - I'm involved in a lingerie store, so hands up, I include lingerie as an idea, but I'd never thought to include tips on wrapping. Presentation is all important. I like the idea, because men aren't normally that great at wrapping, let's be honest.
