A 10-yr-old Christmas List

We have shared the secret. Shhhh....don't tell the smaller kids.

For the first time, he has to give us a list of the things he might like for Christmas. This is hard for him and for us. No more trips to see Santa and those cute pictures we used to get.

We are sad because part of the Christmas magic was the visit from Santa. Now that he is older, we spend more time talking about what Christmas really means and the biggest gift of all. It's a trade-off because we can share the Christmas story while still enjoying the gift giving. He is a very giving child so now that he is in on the secret, he is having a very good time searching for great gifts for others.

He also has a very extensive list that is posted here. At 10, he does not really like toys so his wishes are more expensive than some of the things we would have purchased. We certainly can't afford everything and some of the things he wants are just not going to happen. There is no way that he will get a smart phone. We told him he could get one if he could pay for the service. The look like "I have to get a job" was priceless.

Our favorite family movie

We can all recite the dialog for this movie word-for-word. So why is it that this is our favorite movie. As our child gets older, different parts of the movie apply to us, changing it ever so slightly that it becomes new again. We did buy the Red Ryder BB Gun and will stage his gift as the father did in the movie.

"You'll shoot your eye out", is what we are saying this year as we go from store to store that stocks this item. He is tired of my story about my brother shooting at the swing set and the BB that richotshayed and hit next to my eye. We are having fun with the line from the movie.

"The list"

Couldn't resist scanning his list for this page.

In case you can't read it, he wants:

1. Laptop - We already purchased this item and he is using it. As a homeschooler, he needs access to the online items required for his studies. We have one other computer that I use and am not willing to share (Squidooaholic).

2. DSI.xl Nintendo - probably not. He has several handheld games and this is just not necessary.

3. SOX (Socks) - What would Christmas be without socks. This is a joke in our family and one of the scenes from "A Christmas Story" that we all treasure.

4. Just Dance 2 for the Wii.

5. Six dollars (He He) - I think that the money might find it's way into the stocking.

6, 7, and 8. iPad, iPad Touch, Smart phone - no way

9. RC Helicopter

10. BB Gun

11. Cup Stacker

"The list" page 2

On page one he starts out by saying to ask Grandpa about the BB Gun. See picture (misspelled) shows a baseball field. Everything that he write to us ends with "I love you".

This is already under the bed

For every sale from Amazon on this page, Squidoo donates $1 to Room to Read

I had a BB gun, his grandpa had one and both of my kids had rifles. Weapon needs to be monitored and as this is not a toy, there will be definite rules for its use. Again, back to "A Christmas Story", it will be set off to the side and not given till all the gifts are opened.

There are many choices for Helicopters

This is the helicopter we purchased

It is also under the bed

This is small, can be used indoors and the reviews are helpful. We don't have room to store a large RC helicopter. If he likes it and takes care of it, we will consider updating when he is older but for now, this is the best one we found for his age.

Just Dance 2

This is still in the maybe stage

There are some pretty expensive gifts already purchased and under the bed. This one may not make it under the tree. Besides, his birthday is in January. Still, anything for the Wii that keeps him moving is always a good idea.

Just Dance 2

Not all gifts come from the list

Some of these items I have already bought. The Shrinky Dinks because he like to make things for people and this is just fun. The "Diary of a Whimpy Kid: Cabin Fever" is the latest book and his favorite series.

The other three are maybe's too but these are things that interest him and educational. We tend to buy the more educational toys that teach something and he loves these types of things.

The laptop we bought

This was on the list but we had already decided that it was necessary

We don't need a tower and a keyboard. We need a functional computer that does not take up a lot of space. This fits the bill. The Charter School has several sites where we can find tools to aid in our homeschooling effort. This small notebook takes him right there.

Cup Stacker

Another maybe

He has watched the videos and the kids on TV. He found our camping cups and created his own game. He really, really wants this which is why it is another maybe. This is action, movement and skill and the kit comes with a timer. What I like about it is that it is a race against himself and a great example of personal best which is a lesson we like to reinforce.

Speed Stacks Cups Neon Green (Sport Stacking / Cup Stacking)

Two great videos about the speed stackers

If you don't watch TV with children or the early morning shows, you may not know what this is. While is seems ultra-simple, it can be a real challenge.

The iPad

I may make my own list and ask Santa for one of these

I have researched these and believe that for a 10-yr-old tween, this may be too much. It's a great gift for a responsible teen but I think that there are more apps than a pre-teen needs.

Merry Christmas!

What are you getting for the Tweens in your life?

If you have other suggestions for a tween boy, I would love to hear them. After all, his birthday is in January and this starts all over again.
