Gigapixel Images with Gigapan Epic

First you have to mount the camera on the robot mount. The robot is programmed to take thousands of pictures in a given area specified by the user. So you select your upper left and lower right corners of your panorama, he calculates how many photos are needed, organizes them in rows and columns and clicks away to shoot the pictures.

To be able to store all those pictures it's recommended to have a 4GB card in your camera. You will need a computer with a recommended memory of 2GB (minimum is 1GB), Gigapan Stitcher (included) and a card reader or usb from the camera to download the pictures.

Gigapan was developed during a two-year partnership between scientists from Carnegie Mellon University and NASA's Ames Research Center.
The project also received assistance from Google for funding and Charmed Labs LLC for the design and production of Gigapan.

An earlier version of this imaging technology was developed for the Mars Exploration Rovers; the panoramas created from Mars enabled a simulated experience of being on another planet. The Gigapan project aims to create a similar experience, but for exploration of Earth.

the gigapan has already been used for a variety of for example Pennsylvania board of tourism the to take pictures of Civil War sites.

Being an amateur photographer I was always fascinated by images, especially images of nature and macro. What most images lack is very high resolution and very wide angle. With Gigapan you get the most out of your camera. I think it's great to be able to make panoramas from mountaintops, buildings, bridges, etc. Think for example about making a panorama image of your home or of homes in the real estate business.

I think it's a great technology brought to the consumers. For such a "gadget" I would've expected a higher price.
People will be able to make high resolution images like never before and the best part is that it's for everyone. If you're not a professional photographer - you will not need all that lenses and high resolution cameras.

Altogether it's another proof of just how much the technology is evolving these days :).
