Giggly Pig

Giggly Pig is a local farm that produces a range of excellent sausages and pork products. A frequent sight around the farmer's markets and produce fairs of South England they are now also available online.

Apart from being a devoted customer and very fond of their produce, the lensmaster is not affiliated with the Giggly Pig company.

The origins of Giggly Pig

The founding of the company

Founded in 2007 Giggly Pig specialises in pork products. Supplying homemade sausages, cured bacon and more traditional farm food like trotters, tails and patties it has quickly developed a deserved reputation for excellence. Today Giggly Pig can been seen at farmer's markets around Essex, London and south east England, distinguished not only by the quality of its food, but by the notable bustle that always surrounds the stalls.

It was founded by Tracy Mackness, who raises rare Saddleback pigs, and has grown rapidly over three years. The story behind Giggly Pig has been covered repeatedly by the media. As this lens focuses on the food, a selection of the articles are linked below.

A Personal Review

My opinion of Giggly Pig

I first encountered Giggly Pig when I was researching the Surrey Iron Railway for the history lens. After that much walking, their stand - with its grill full of sausages and pork patties - was a very welcome sight! Their produce was good enough that when I ran into them again some weeks later I tried another one to see if it was just the walking that had made it taste that good. Fortunately, it wasn't and the sausages were excellent.

With 65 varieties of sausages, ranging from the mild through the surprisingly tangy, to the violently hot, Giggly Pig has got something to cater to all tastes. Hand made from pure pork, these are also surprisingly healthy for sausages with none of the additives, fat or gristle often found in shop bought ones. Their cured bacon is also excellent, with strong flavour and rind that crisps properly.

With some many varieties the choice may be confusing, but they often offer samples on their stalls so you can find out which one you like. In addition, they also offer a full grill doing sausages and pork patties in buns - a tastier and healthier alternative to the ubiquitous burger.

Although Giggly Pig produce can be difficult to locate outside the south east, they are present at many farmers' markets in that area, so you can stock up easily. The sausages are freezable, and they have recently begun offering their produce online, making it easier to buy in bulk.

- An understatement

These are possibly the hottest sausages ever made, sending at least one Thai-food-lover heading a bucket of water and complaining it was too hot. The ingredients are best summed up as Chilli, chilli and chilli sauce, with a little extra added heat. If you like hot food, do not miss these - but also do not forget the bottles of water!

Giggly Pig's range of sausages lend themselves to a range of cooking styles. A spicy one might make give a sausage casserole a bit of extra tang, or an Ale or Cumberland sausage can make a Full English Breakfast (best combined with their bacon).

For a smaller snack, a sausage sandwich, or eaten alone they taste fine. They keep their flavour even when cold, making them perfect with salads or pasta.
