Gil Scott-Heron is renowned as the originator of rap. His poetic lyrics and perceptive commentary have inspired a huge range of music genres from blues to hip hop. Born in 1949 in Chicago, he went to Lincoln University in Pennsylvania.
He spent 3 years in prison in 2000 for a drugs offence.His album called 'I'm New Here' was released in 2010, and the lead single was called 'New York Is Killing Me'. The artistic genre that sums up Gil Scott-Heron's creative catalogue is known as Spoken Word. The style truly evolved in the 1980s in the form of poetry slams that drew their inspiration from rapper competitions.
