Gillette Castle | Pictures & Information

Ranked #4,451 in Travel & Places, #131,444 overall

Gillette Castle was built in 1914 on a plot of land overlooking the Connecticut River. The castle was designed & built as a private residence for William Gillette, an actor who earned his fame by portraying Sherlock Holmes on stage.

The grounds once included the Gillette Castle train, which was eventually torn up and dismantled. (A fun fact: Lake Compounce actually purchased some pieces of the track and use it for their train which wraps around the Lake.) Read on to learn more about the man William Gillette, the history of the estate & view a picture gallery from yours truly.

So if you're looking for things to do in Connecticut, stopping in and visiting Gillette Castle is definitely worth the visit. Apart from Gillette Castle State Park itself, the drive is rather scenic. Once you get there you can picnic, hike some of the trails, visit the small museum inside the visitor center and even take a tour of the house (if it's in season.) Visit the CT.gov page for the park for more information.

This is fabulous, just fabulous. And a really great argument in favour of a 'staycation' - can't wait to see what else you've discovered at home!
