- Born August 1968 in Chicago, Illinois.
- In the early 1980s she had her nose pierced, wore punk clothes, went barefoot, and shaved and dyed her hair various colors. Her high school classmates voted her Most Bizarre, Class Clown and Most Likely to be Arrested.
- Gillian graduated from The Theatre School at DePaul University in Chicago (formerly the Goodman School of Drama) in 1990.
- After some success on the stage in the early 90s, she moved to Los Angeles and spent a year auditioning without success. She accepted a few small TV role (after vowing never to do TV) and was sent the script for a science fiction series on the new Fox TV channel.
- After rejecting other actresses the station tried to force upon him Chris Carter offered her the role of Dana Scully on the X-files.
- The X-files ran for nine years winning her two SAGs, and Emmy and a Golden Globe.
- When The X-Files ended, Gillian performed in several stage productions and worked on various other projects.
- Her role of Lady Deadlock in the BBC television adaptation of Charles Dickens' novel Bleak House won her several awards.
- Gillian hosts PBS' Masterpiece Theater.
- She is involved in a number of charitable works including the Neurofibromatosis Foundation, she is a campaigner for Action for Southern Africa, she is a vegan and an active member of PETA, supporting animal rights.
- She has two children.
