Apply Realistic Makeup on Gimp
I use a free photo editing program called Gimp and I find that it works just as well as Photoshop. Applying realistic makeup is fun and easy if you just know how to do it!
In this lens I'll show you how to apply makeup that looks real on Gimp, but you can also use these instructions on other programs, like Paint.NET, Sumo Paint, or Photoshop.
Above is a photo of Victoria Bergsman that I edited. It came out a bit small but I hope you can see the difference.
I get my eyelash brushes from the wonderfully talented redheadstock.
Thanks so much!
What You'll Need
Eyelash brushes which you can find on Deviantart. Just search: Gimp Eyelash Brushes
(The link goes to the search term in Deviantart.)
A photo of a person, preferably forward facing so that you can apply the eyelashes properly.
Some spare time. The process takes me about 15-20 minutes.
A bit of photo editing experience. You'll want to have watched a couple tutorials or completed a few projects so that you understand the lingo.
How it's Done
Step by step
1. Open up a photo of a person on Gimp and make a duplicate of the background layer. On this layer, use the heal tool to smooth out imperfections in the skin. Use the blur tool to smooth out the lips. This is much like exfoliating the lips in real life. If it looks a bit too blurred, turn down the rate of your blur tool.2. Once everything is nice and soft, create a new layer. Turn down the opacity to around 40-60 and use a color from the lips as lipstick with the paintbrush tool. Blur around the edges to create a natural effect if needed. Adjust the opacity until it looks right.
3. Create another layer and grab a color that matches your model's eyes. Draw some eyeshadow on the upper lid. Adjust the opacity of the layer so that the eyeshadow looks pretty real. Then blur at 100% rate until a realistic eyeshadow has been achieved. If the shadow is too faint after blurring, you might want to turn up the opacity of your layer. Repeat on the other side.
4. Open a new layer. Grab your eyelash brushes and adjust the size to suit your model's eyes. Make sure the color is a black or dark brown hue, depending on the colorations of your model. When the brushes are the right size, just click down to apply the eyelashes. You might want to adjust the opacity so that the lashes look real. Use the matching eyelash brush for the other eye.
If you want you can use a lower eyelash brush as eyeliner. If you don't want to do that or don't have lower eyelash brushes, repeat step 3 but in a thinner line on the lower lids.
5. Create another layer. Grab a color from the pinkest part of your subject's cheeks, or select an appropriate bronze color. Draw it along the model's cheekbones just as you would real blush or bronzer. Use the blur tool to blend and adjust the opacity until you have a realistic blush.
You're done!

How to turn a boy into a girl
With Gimp anything is possible!
I just had to write about turning a boy into a girl on this lens. No, you can't literally change their gender, but the effect can be quite realistic. Here's how to do it!
Follow the instructions about applying makeup above, then do this:
- Use the iWarp tool to change any prominently masculine features. Shrink a large jaw or nose and enlarge lips.
- Do NOT try to give a man err, a womanly chest. It won't work on iWarp. Get an expensive edition of Photoshop if you want to do that.
- When adding makeup, don't overdo it. You want him to look like a woman, not like this!
- Adding earrings is easy. On DeviantArt there are stud brushes that look like stud earrings. Click HERE to get them. To add them to your model, just shrink them so that they look earring size and click on the ear a few times to get the right effect.
Mascara from Amazon

Benefit Cosmetics BADgal Lash Mascara
Amazon Price: $6.99 (as of 05/31/2012)![]()
In a word, awesome. Thick enough to coat well and make my lashes look thich and full but not clumpy. No smudging, no flaking. I curl my lashes most days first, but even the days that I don't curl and I just use the mascara I notice that my lashes look big, lush and a little curvier. Comes off easily when I wash my face with soap and water.

Think realism-don't make your subject look fake
How to Whiten Teeth
just in case you need it
To the right is a photo of some teeth before and after whitening.Scroll over the image to see who they belong to!
Instructions:
- Create a new layer. If the teeth have any whiteness at all, collect a color from the whitest area of the tooth. If they are completely yellow, just get an off white color. Pure white doesn't work because it's too harsh and will look fake.
- Color each tooth, but don't completely fill in the teeth as that will create a blurry and blended look.
- Turn the opacity of your layer down to around 20 and blur. Adjust the opacity until everything looks real.
Tell me What you Think!
Have you ever done this?
Have you ever applied makeup on a photo editing program like Gimp?
If not, do you want to after reading this lens?
