Drop Shadow

Starting with a new image, I opened the photo I took of the cardinal, and then made a copy of it (click on the image of two windows on the bottom of the "layers" dialog).

Then I painted the bottom layer the same color as the background in the cardinal photo.

Then I resized the cardinal photo about 15 pixels smaller than the background (this was also initiated within the "layers" dialog).

Select the top layer (the one with the image) by clicking on it in the layers dialog, and then locate the "drop shadow script fu" filter (see below).

The "Drop Shadow" can be found under "filters." Scroll to "light and shadows" and then to "drop shadow." Click on the "drop shadow" and a "script-fu" window will open.

This image was created with the following settings:
Offset X: 8
Offset Y: 8
Blur radius: 15
Color: 000000
Opacity: 80
Allow resizing NO (uncheck the box)

Click "OK" and the shadow will be created for you.

Sunset Impressionism

Using a photo of a spectacular sunset, I was able to create this photo art design by using the 'artistic filter' in GIMP. I love the impressionist selection because it allows you to preview all of the changes before you commit to a particular setting. This is great for creating any kind of abstract designs.

Black Eyed Susan

This design originated from a photo of a black eyed susan in my back yard. A series of adjustments to the photo (cropping, color adjustment, and a clothify treatment), revealed an amazing texture application. Sharpen the image on the last adjustment and you will have this beautiful image that would be great for any graphic design project.

Wild Rose

You wouldn't know by looking at this design that it was once a wild rose in full bloom. I cropped it to only reveal part of a petal and part of a leaf. Then, using the dodge/burn tool in combination with the smudge tool, I worked it as if it were clay on canvas until I found this final design that I really liked.

Tip-For This Design: When using the dodge/burn tool be sure to change the settings "Shadow for Burn- Highlights for Dodge" so that when you are Burning you will have the effect of shadows, and when you Dodge you will have the effect of highlights. Come in with your smudge after each dodge or burn application and be sure to change the smudge brush to a feather brush... (you could just leave it on feather to make the steps and the transfer easier... in this design I changed to a hard brush for dodge and burn, then to a feather brush for the smudge).

Hot Chili Peppers

Again...the design dosn't tell you what it once looked like. This started out as a photo of chili peppers (on the vine ready to harvest). With a few alterations you have yourself a very unique design.

First step is to adjust the colors for vividness. You will lose a little bit of color when in tranformation mode so be sure to make the contrast a bit more than usual and the saturation a little bit higher than you might in general.

After you have the color adjustment done, go to the filters, select (will return to this... LOL I can not find the tool at the moment).

The Elf and Me

This was a photo of the elf that came to visit. I created the costume (my hat) by making a copy of the elf's hat while the photo was original size, resized the large photo to the mini version you see here, and then pasted the copy to the mini version. This way there were no pixals lost during the transformation (which would have happened if I tried to enlarge the hat to fit me instead of reducing the size of the photo to fit the hat).

After that I used a regular paint brush tool (and an bit of dodge/burn/smudge to create the elf's sun glasses).

Love The Page Curl

The Page Curl tool is part of the filters as well. This was created from a cropped section of my merry-go-round photo (my elf friend was in the other part of the photo). After selecting the part of the photo I wanted to use, I cropped the photo and then resized the background to 250x250 PX.

Then I used the page curl tool to transform it.
This would be a great tool to use to make a gif or perhaps put another image under the curl so that it appears to be turning the page?

Just thinking while I type and have a new idea or two.
