Redhead Discrimination

While this topic has been alive for years with the help of South Park's infamous episode and a fiery YouTube confession, the world's largest fertility clinic in Denmark recently added more fuel to the fire. Cyros made a public rejection of redhead genes due to limited demand to the already sufficient (if not excessive) supply.

Now even more controversy exists at the root of the growing 'ginger' movement. Underneath the vast material for jokes, commentating and teasing lie questions of discrimination and the actual scientific threat to redheads.

Just Fiction?

Does science actually back up this 50 year claim, or is it just a provocative myth...

Abbreviated, yet scientific details from "Redhead and Proud" and "The Sunday Times":

-Globalization and migration are the key factors as to why different races are mixing and inter-marrying at a rate never seen before.

-The proportion of redheads to the rest of the world's population stands at about 1% - 2%, except in Ireland and Scotland where it is up to 8%.
And unfortunately this portion of redheads has significantly declined over the past 50 years.

-The reason behind why humans evolved red hair is one of the mysteries of human evolution. Red hair only appeared once humans settled in Europe (approximately 20,000 years ago). Compare that to when humans evolved in Africa 1-2 million years ago... and you got a case carved out for Sherlock.

-The genetics of red hair is complicated, to say the least. One of the genes for hair color has 40 variants , and only about SIX cause red hair. Children must inherit at least two of these genes (one from each parent) to have red hair.

-Scotland demonstrates how some communities have more redheads than others. Communities that are stable, rural and have a common ancestry tend to spread and pass-on similar genes from generation to generation (that is not to be confused with incestuous relations, by the way).
